GSFR Assists New Holland EMS with EMT Academy

GSFR is proud to participate in and assist with the New Holland Ambulance EMT academy each year. Our officers take part in an evening of classroom instruction, introducing the students to the realm of technical rescue which they will be exposed to once in the field.

We also assist with hands on training in vehicle extrication, allowing the students the opportunity to have first hand exposure to the tools, environment and situations they will encounter.

Thank you New Holland EMS for allowing us to assist in training the next generation of EMS providers!

Weekly Drill - Engine Co. Focus & Rope Training

The month of May has focused on the core of Engine Co. functions; positioning, water supply & attack lines. Over the last few weeks, crews have spent time working on water supply for hydranted and non-hydranted areas, 200’ lines and bumper lines, 300’ & 400’ lines as well as leader lines & extending/long lines.

On Tuesday evenings, apparatus and crews have been out and about in our first due, stretching lines on businesses, and our own homes. This provides real world obstacles, apparatus positioning challenges and thought processes on the how, why and where, when stretching.

This week, while most personnel were stretching leader lines and extending lines, Rescue 39 traveled Co. 44 (In*******se) to work with their personnel on Ropes and rigging equipment. Training opportunities like this allow personnel to better understand each others equipment and capabilities before an incident. Thank you for the invite!

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RESPONSE

Shortly before 1pm on Friday, units from GSFR & Martindale were dispatched to Tyson Foods for a gas leak inside. Contractors were working to repair a sink hole underneath the building and inadvertently caused a small blue flame ignition to the excavated ground under the building. The building was immediately evacuated.

Fire units arrived and met with plant safety and facilities personnel and UGI to begin tracing the cause. High readings of combustable gas were found in the ground under the building. Command spoke with Haz Mat team members to brief them on the findings which prompted response for additional meters and detection equipment.

Personnel worked for several hours taking readings throughout the building interior, exterior, the plant property and adjacent properties to determine the source of the Methane.

Crews determined the likely cause to be a compromised landfill gas transmission line under ground. Unified Command staff worked for the next several hours on phones with federal regulatory agencies, states agencies, Lancaster Co EMA, transmission line customers, New Holland Borough & Earl Twp. EMA and Public works teams, pipeline teams and landfill personnel in Berks & Chester Counties.

Transmission was shutdown and flaring operations were started at the landfills. Once pipeline response personnel arrived, all parties were briefed and command was transferred. Tyson response personnel began ventilation operations and the incident was turned over to 3rd party agencies.

Units from GSFR cleared the scene at 10:45pm.
