Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. Bernard Cigrand, a small-town Wisconsin teacher, originated the idea for an annual flag day, every June 14, in 1885. That year, he led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday.
