NHS Cares We support a safe, healthy, addiction-free New Hope / Solebury, PA community!

NHS Cares, a nonprofit based in the New Hope – Solebury community, began in March, 2008, as a group of parents, youth, teachers, administrators, clergy, law enforcement, and community members who were concerned that students were using and, in some cases abusing, alcohol and other drugs. Based upon these observations, it was determined that a strong and unified community response was necessary. So

me 8 years later, the organization is still going strong, focused on reducing underage drinking and substance use amongst the community’s youth. In the fall of 2015, NHS Cares received a federal grant to help sustain this very important work, potentially for the next 10 years. Known as the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program, the grant operates under the following premise: local problems require local solutions. The federal government looks to local organizations, such as NHS Cares, to determine the unique local problems and the solutions that go along with them. The goals are twofold: to strengthen collaboration among community entities and reduce substance use among youth. The approach is multi-pronged: community education, community collaboration, and environmental change. Our coalition is working to increase protective factors that mitigate risks for our young people. According to current national data, rates of substance abuse have declined significantly in DFC grant communities. All DFC community coalitions have one thing in common: the involvement of just about everyone in the community, as it truly does “take a village.” We need your ideas and energy as we strive to educate our parents and youth, establish healthy community norms, and create policies and practices that will help us maintain a safe and healthy environment for our children. The DFC Program is a collaborative effort between the Executive Office of the President’s ONDCP (Office of National Drug Control Policy) and Department of Health and Human Services’ SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Coalition meetings are held at 7:00 pm on the 2nd Wednesday of the month (except July and August) in the High School library and are open to the public.

One of the many ways our student youth coalition, The TODAY Club at New Hope-Solebury High School, support their community throughout the year is through letter writing. Students write positive notes and letters of support for their peers, which they leave for students to take as/when needed from the Mental Health Station they added to the high school library this year.

As we move quickly toward prom and graduation events in May and June, NHS Cares urges parents and caregivers to 'just say no' to hosting underage drinking in their homes. Our annual spring awareness campaign, "Parents Who Host Lose the Most," is once again in full swing. You might notice the bright green yard signs posted around the high school campus with this important reminder to help our kids stay safe.

On Saturday, April 25th, several groups of TODAY Club volunteers participated in Medication Take Back Day at multiple locations around Bucks County, an event coordinated each fall and spring by the Bucks County Drug & Alcohol Commission.

They assisted the New Hope and Solebury Police Departments with the collection of unused and leftover prescription and non-prescription medication and sharps. The event was a huge success, with a total of 10,894 pounds of medication and sharps safely collected and removed!

We are thankful to all of our students and community partners for their time and efforts to keep our community safe, clean, and healthy.

The TODAY Club's Mental Health Library Station offers NHSDD high school students an array of mental health resources and activities!

This past week, TODAY Club students practiced mindfulness with coloring pages and mindful journaling prompts. Current research suggests journaling, as well as other mindfulness practices featured on the Mental Health Library Station, can help improve depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress resilience. With prompts including gratitude journaling, uninterrupted mindless writing (AKA brain dumping), and reflection on self-growth, students can destress, as well as visualize and begin to unpack complicated emotional and mental experiences and burdens.

We hope this resource will continue to introduce students to new mental health and wellness practices!

As disposable e-cigarettes become more common, schools and communities are facing a new challenge: v**e waste. These devices contain plastics, lithium batteries, and toxic chemicals that are often discarded improperly, creating risks for both environmental and public health. Join a discussion on how v**e waste is showing up in schools, what it means for communities, and how this issue can open new pathways for youth engagement and prevention.
