If you live in Lyon Township and someone asks, โ€œWhere do you live?โ€, what do you say?

๐‹๐ฒ๐จ๐ง ๐“๐จ๐ฐ๐ง๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ? ๐๐ž๐ฐ ๐‡๐ฎ๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง? ๐’๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐‹๐ฒ๐จ๐ง? ๐๐จ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž? ๐Ÿ˜†

Itโ€™s not as straightforward as you might think. Some Lyon Township residents have a New Hudson mailing address, while others have a South Lyon mailing address, even though they donโ€™t live within the City of South Lyon. And ask some longtime locals where they live, and youโ€™ll simply hear โ€œNew Hudson.โ€

Here at the Lyon Township DDA, weโ€™ve been thinking about how our residents actually identify our community, particularly our historic downtown New Hudson area.

So, Lyon Township residents, we want to hear from you:

๐ŸŽ„ Weโ€™re still looking for a Holiday Market helper (or two)!

Planning for Lighting Up the Grand is moving along, but we still need someone interested in helping lead and coordinate our Holiday Craft & Vendor Market at Dolsen Elementary on Saturday, December 12.

This is a great opportunity for someone who loves community events, supporting local makers and bringing people together!

You would help:
โ€ข Recruit local crafters and vendors
โ€ข Coordinate vendor details leading up to the event
โ€ข Join our monthly Lighting Up the Grand planning meetings
โ€ข Help keep things running smoothly at the market on event day

You wonโ€™t be doing it alone! Youโ€™ll have support from the Lighting Up the Grand planning team throughout the process.

Maybe event planning is your thingโ€”or maybe you know someone who would be perfect for this role. Please share this post and help us find our Holiday Market person!

๐Ÿ‚ Itโ€™s almost scarecrow season in Downtown New Hudson!

Weโ€™re gearing up for our annual Scarecrows on the Grand, and weโ€™d love to see your creativity on display!

If youโ€™d like to create a scarecrow to display at Inspiration Park, or if youโ€™re a downtown business that would like to decorate your own location, be sure to register soon. Participation is FREE!

๐Ÿ† Prizes will be awarded for Peopleโ€™s Choice and Most Creative Display, and scarecrows will be on display throughout Downtown New Hudson from October 10โ€“31.

Gather your family, coworkers, organization, or friends and get creativeโ€”we canโ€™t wait to see what you come up with!

Have you ever wondered about the story behind your home? Who lived there before you? When was it built? What clues might be hiding in its architectureโ€”or in historical records?

Join us for House Mysteries โ€“ House Histories on Saturday, September 19 at 2:00 PM. Presenters Carol Bacak-Egbo and Ron Campbell will use their research of a DDA-owned house on Rice Street in New Hudson to demonstrate how you can uncover the history of a home, no matter its age.

You may have noticed the new HAWK (High-Intensity Activated CrossWalk) signal near our downtown parking lot!

This was a joint project between Lyon Township and the Lyon Township DDA to provide a safer connection across Grand River Avenue. With the addition of the public parking lot, the goal was to make it easier for people to safely reach businesses on the south side, and to use the lot for overflow parking during school and community events.

A few things to know:

๐Ÿšถ Pedestrians: Push the button and wait for the WALK signal before crossing.
๐Ÿš— Drivers: A solid red means STOP. When the red lights are flashing, stop first and proceed only when the crosswalk is clear.
๐Ÿšฆ When not activated, the signal remains dark and traffic proceeds normally.

You may have noticed some changes in Lyon Township at the Huron Valley Trail Crossings. The Township has recently installed Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB's) at the HVT crossings at Milford Road and Grand River. These devices increase pedestrian visibility and driver awareness at uncontrolled, marked crosswalks. RRFBโ€™s consist of two, rectangular shaped signs with flashing lights.
Here are some rules to follow when approaching these devices:

PEDESTRIANS or BIKERS - How to use a RRFB 1) Press the button to activate 2) Wait at the curb until approaching drivers stop 3) Do not step into the street until drivers are at a complete stop or there is no oncoming traffic 4) Look both ways and cross with care

DRIVERS โ€“ How to react to a RRFB 1) If you see lights it means someone is waiting to cross 2) Come to a complete stop behind the designated stop bar before the crosswalk 3) Remain stopped until the pedestrian has completely cleared your side of the road and your lanes.

REMEMBER - NEVER PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT IS STOPPED OR SLOWING DOWN AT A CROSSWALK!

Last week our DDA Staff had the opportunity to visit a neighboring DDA, Downtown Lake Orion. We want to thank their Director, Matthew Gibb for hosting us and letting us spend some time learning about their community and ways they are making an impact. It's through networking like this, and through our affiliation with Advantage Oakland (Main Street Oakland County) that we are able to continue to learn and expand our services we can bring to New Hudson.
