💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Regina Broussard | IPSB Education Center

After spending 20 years working in the medical profession, Regina Broussard has made her way back to education—and while the two worlds may look very different, she has already found something familiar between them.

She still gets to help people.

Regina previously spent two years working in education before her career took her into healthcare. Now in her first year back, she credits her coworkers at the IPSB Education Center with making the transition a little easier. She describes them as kind, helpful, and always willing to point her in the right direction as she settles into her new role.

And what exactly does that role include?

A little bit of everything.

Regina cleans, decorates, keeps the lobby welcoming, helps people find what they need, and works to make resources accessible to everyone who comes through the doors. Basically, she’s becoming the Education Center’s “office fairy.”

One of her favorite experiences since returning to education was helping with the Gifting Grace event. Regina helped pack school bags with supplies for students in need and enjoyed a luncheon alongside others serving the community. She remembers the food being wonderful, the homemade lemonade being especially good, and, more importantly, the feeling of everyone coming together for a common purpose.

Her transition back to education has also meant a big change at home. After years of hospital night shifts, Regina is now working during the day—and her four adult children are proud of their mom for making the change.

Speaking of being a mother of four, Regina has some very practical advice for students:

Be on time. Be organized. Take care of yourself. And go to bed on time!

Because after 20 years in healthcare and raising four children, she knows just how important sleep really is.

When Regina gets a little time for herself, she enjoys working out and line dancing. And at the end of a long, productive workday, she appreciates that quiet moment when everything is finished and she can finally “shut her brain off.”

When asked what makes IPSD special, Regina brought everything right back to the reason she enjoys helping people:

The district cares for the whole person—not just the education of the individual.

Just a quick calendar reminder for our IPSD families!

All Iberia Parish School District schools and offices will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.

We hope our students, families, faculty, and staff enjoy the long weekend and a little extra time to rest, recharge, and spend time with the people they love.

It's that time of year again when we open the window for referrals to our Talent Program (Music, Visual Arts, Theater). Administrators, teachers, parents, and students can all refer their students, friends, or family members. In fact, students can even refer themselves if they have an interest in the program. The referral window will be open from now through Friday, October 2, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.

Students who doodle, tap on the desks, always volunteer to answer questions or take lead roles in group activities...those very dramatic students who always have a song in their head, a clever response during group activities, acting out answers to questions instead of verbalizing. Students already excelling in band or chorus may be interested in the challenge.

There is no limit to the number of students you can refer. If in doubt, refer and give the student the opportunity to do the work associated with the next step...the screening process. It takes less than a minute to complete the Google form.

Don't wait....refer today!

This form is for parents and teachers to refer their students to the Talented Programs. This will give the Special Education office all the information needed to begin the evaluation process.

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Kim Pusateri | Caneview Elementary

Ask Kim Pusateri what a school secretary does and her answer is pretty straightforward: “We do EVERYTHING.”

Doctor? Some days. Mechanic? Apparently. Tech support? Of course. And somewhere in between all of that, there’s an actual office to run!

Kim has been with IPSD since 2019, and through all the different hats she wears, her favorite part has remained the same—the children. She especially loves that mid-morning sweet spot when everyone has made it where they need to be, the day finds its rhythm, and things start getting done.

What stands out most to Kim about Caneview is the compassion the staff shows for their students. Secretary’s Day makes that love especially easy to see when students stop by with little gestures to make sure she knows just how appreciated she is.

Working in the front office has also given Kim a unique perspective. She gets to see a broad spectrum of people’s lives and has had the opportunity to work alongside different principals throughout her years with the district, learning and adapting with each experience.

Her advice to students is only two words, but they can solve a surprising number of problems:

Be prepared.

Outside of Caneview, Kim enjoys reading, playing mahjong, spending time with her grandchildren, and making trips to Disney.

When asked what makes Caneview special, she pointed right back to the people—the ones who are present every day, showing up for the children who depend on them.

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Jody Derouen | Center Street Elementary

If you ask Jody Derouen what a school secretary does, you may want to pull up a chair—the list is LONG.

After almost 15 years with IPSD, Jody has been the “Walmart door greeter,” tech support, billing department, tooth fairy, occasional triage nurse, and the go-to person for just about anything that finds its way into the front office.

But tucked between all those jobs are the moments she loves most: the kids.

Sometimes that means sharing a smile or one of those quirky conversations only a child could come up with. Other times, it means drying tears, helping a student reset during a difficult day, or simply being the person they need for a few minutes.

After so many years at Center Street, Jody has also experienced something pretty special—the full circle of a school community. She has watched former students grow up and eventually walk back through those same doors with children of their own.

That history comes with plenty of laughter, too. For Jody’s 50th birthday, the Center Street crew decided a regular celebration simply wouldn’t do. Students and staff arrived dressed in black to playfully “mourn” her youth, slipped her cards throughout the day, and kept the milestone jokes coming. Needless to say, they made sure it was a birthday she wouldn’t forget!

Jody also credits the principals she has worked beside with shaping her experience at CSE. She remembers growing alongside former principal Kyla Aucoin as they supported one another and became a strong team. Today, she says she and Mrs. Champagne are building that same kind of partnership together.

Her advice to students centers on something she believes can carry them far beyond school: keep a positive mindset, hold yourself accountable, and take ownership of your choices.

When she isn’t taking care of everyone at Center Street, Jody enjoys taking care of her garden. She loves cooking with fresh ingredients and even makes her own preserves.

And after nearly 15 years, there’s one thing she wants every Cardinal who comes through those doors to remember:

“Once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal. I don’t care where you go in life—you started here, with us.”

Fly high, Cardinals. ❤️

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Annette Landry | Iberia Parish Career Center

For Annette Landry, 12 years with IPSD have been filled with students, relationships, and the feeling of being part of one big family.

Having worked with students from elementary through high school, Annette has had the opportunity to watch them grow through different stages of their education. At IPCC, she says the students are amazing—and admits with a smile that “they are a bit spoiled by us.”

Behind the scenes, Annette describes the secretary’s role simply: hold it together and keep the ship running. But for her, the most meaningful part of the job goes beyond keeping things organized. It’s building relationships with students and knowing they feel cared for.

Those moments when she realizes she has made a difference are what make the work worthwhile.

Her advice to students? Don’t sweat the small stuff. Stay focused.

Annette also enjoys the lighter moments at IPCC, especially staff dress-up days, and when she’s away from school, you’ll likely find her doing something she loves—fishing!

When asked what makes IPCC special, Annette pointed to the commitment of its faculty:

“We push and encourage our students to succeed and ensure that they grow.”

Thank you, Annette, for 12 years of helping keep the ship running and, most importantly, making sure students know there are people in their corner.

🔥 Building Skills for Life

On Tuesday, students participating in the Fire Starter Project Class IX came together for the program’s annual Life Skills Day, spending the day learning practical skills designed to serve them well beyond the classroom.

Throughout the event, students explored everything from car maintenance and healthy living to etiquette, social media, and managing their digital footprint, with an escape room activity and time for reflection mixed in along the way.

A special thank you goes to Arceneaux Ford Inc. , The Gym of New Iberia, LLC , Jodie Garritt, and TDR Business Solutions for sharing their time, knowledge, and real-world experience with these students. Opportunities like this are possible because local businesses and community members are willing to invest in the next generation.

And congratulations to the students who participated! Thank you for showing up ready to learn, ask questions, try something new, and make the most of the experience.

It takes a community working together to prepare students not only for graduation, but for life beyond the classroom. 💙💚

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Carla Bryan | Coteau Elementary

After 19 years with IPSD, Carla Bryan has learned that some of the best parts of working in a school are the relationships that grow along the way.

At Coteau Elementary, Carla loves interacting with students, forming bonds, and knowing everyone by name. She even brings a little fun to the morning announcements by sharing a joke each day! Students regularly stop by with their own jokes, hoping theirs will earn a spot on an upcoming announcement.

For Carla, those connections extend far beyond the school day. She describes the students as “my kids from 8:00–3:30,” and many of the relationships formed at Coteau have grown into lifelong friendships. That sense of connection comes naturally in a close-knit community where so many families have grown up together.

Education also runs in Carla’s family. Her mother spent 30 years as a teacher and, as Carla puts it, “set the bar.”

Her advice to students is to begin every new school year with an open mind and a willingness to learn something new—you just might discover something you never knew you would enjoy.

Outside of school, Carla loves bird watching and even leaves treats out to keep her feathered visitors happy.

When asked what makes Coteau Elementary special, Carla shared a fitting reminder of the impact educators can have:

“The people who walk through the door change lives and make a difference.”
