At approximately 9:20 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the New Iberia Police Department (NIPD) received a report of two masked individuals armed with fi****ms inside Iberia Medical Center, located at 2315 E. Main Street.

Due to the serious nature of the call, multiple units responded to the hospital. Upon arrival, officers deployed to various areas throughout the facility. As a precaution, the hospital was placed on lockdown while officers conducted a thorough search of the premises.

MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD

The New Iberia Police Department is honored to formally present Police Officer Darian Charles with the Meritorious Service Award.

On April 4, 2026, Officer Charles was attending the Laotian New Year Festival and Parade in an off-duty capacity, when an unexpected and dangerous incident occurred. Despite being off-duty, Officer Charles immediately took action by carrying victims to safety and rending aid to those suffering critical injuries.

Officer Charles’ rapid response, sound judgement, and unwavering professionalism in the face of chaos demonstrated exceptional courage and a selfless commitment to the safety and well-being of others.

Officer Charles exemplified the core values of our profession – Integrity, Honor, Compassion, Courage, and Professionalism.

These actions serve as a powerful reminder of our sworn duty to protect and serve, both on and off duty.

Officer Charles received a Letter of Commendation from the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office. It is stated in the letter, “I am confident that due to his intervention, victims of this tragic event were spared further suffering and, in some cases, potential loss of life. Officer Charles’ selfless decision to render critical medical aid in a dangerous and chaotic environment directly contributed to the preservation of life and exemplifies the exceptional professionalism and commitment to duty upheld by the New Iberia Police Department.”

The Meritorious Service Award is one of the highest honors given by the New Iberia Police Department and is presented to those who go above and beyond their duty, making significant, sustained contributions to their department, community, or public safety. The Meritorious Service Award honors excellence, distinguished achievement, or acts of courage that surpass normal expectations.

Did you know that while exact, verified statistics are difficult to pinpoint, it is estimated that less than 1 in 10, or roughly 10% or less of the general public, possesses the specific aptitude and mental fortitude required to be a successful public safety dispatcher?

The role of a public safety dispatcher is often described as the "invisible first responder," acting as the vital link between a panicked caller and the help they desperately need. It is a profession that demands an extraordinary blend of split-second decision-making, emotional detachment, and multitasking under extreme pressure.

This rarity highlights why the hiring process for emergency communications is so rigorous. Candidates must pass intense multitasking tests that simulate chaotic radio traffic, and background checks that probe their integrity. Beyond technical skill, a dispatcher must maintain a calm, authoritative voice while hearing someone live through their worst nightmare. It is a unique calling where the ability to process trauma in real-time, while simultaneously coordinating a complex tactical response, separates the few from the many.

As we near the end of National Public Safety Telecommunicators’ Week for 2026, the New Iberia Police Department recognizes how rare and special our dispatchers are. If you have a need for the NIPD and speak with our dispatchers, the FIRST first responders, please know that they are here to get you the help you need and thank them if you think about it.

“Becoming a dispatcher isn't just a job; it's a calling to serve. It requires a unique blend of composure, empathy, and split-second decision-making, all wielded to create a safer world, one call at a time.” Click https://www.evansonline.com/blog/what-makes-a-great-dispatcher to read the rest of the blog post.
