Good tips if you're firing up the grills this weekend! 🥩🌭🍔🔥

Firing up the grill this weekend? Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use. Be mindful of safety when cooking outdoors and follow these safety tips from NFPA.

Lebanon Valley traveled to Canaan on Monday 5/18 for this month's Task Force Drill. Any opportunity in good weather is a chance to refine the logistics of moving water. Red Rock Volunteer Fire Company provided fill site operations and ladder master stream, Canaan Protective Fire Company New York provided attack engine and tanker, Lebanon Valley provided tanker and personnel, and West Stockbridge Fire Department provided dump site operations.

The New York Statewide burn ban has ended. Please continue to use caution whenever you are performing a controlled burn and take these steps to protect your property and your neighbors:

📱 Report your controlled burn in advance to Columbia County NY 911: When your address is on file with the dispatchers, if a bystander reports smoke or fire in your area, dispatchers will notify the fire department of any controlled burns on file. 📞: 518-828-4114
👀 Always have a responsible person on site to supervise the burn while the fire is active.
💧 Have a way to put the fire out if things get out of hand.
🗑️ Burning garbage is always prohibited in New York State. Always use the appropriate facilities to dispose of trash, construction debris, and recyclables.
🚒 If the situation changes, and the fire becomes an uncontrolled burn, call 911 right away.

These are the challenges interior firefighters, whether in a career department or volunteer (like this story), train for. Fire doesn't ask whether you're getting paid.

We all have something to contribute to make sure our firefighters get home safe:
- Interior firefighters: Rescue & fire suppression
- Exterior firefighters / scene support: Keep the pumps running and the water flowing, staging for evacuation, getting command whatever they need
- Fire Police: Keep the traffic flowing and not create another incident to manage

🚒 Mondays @ Lebanon Valley Fire mean drill night, and spring drill nights mean hydrant flushing! Our members were all over the district tonight, from County 13 to Darrow Road, cleaning debris and obstructions from dry hydrants and ensuring good water supply.

🌊 Dry hydrants, unlike municipal hydrants, are passive pipes installed in ponds and streams to provide easy access to static water in all weather conditions. Flushing consists of backfeeding the hydrant with tank water to clear silt and debris, then refilling our tanks to ensure the hydrant is working properly. Unlike municipal hydrant flushing, there is no impact to your home's water supply.

🏡 Property owners with dry hydrants: Be sure that your hydrant remains accessible and visible to responders at all times; please keep the area free of obstructions so that responding crews, especially mutual aid companies coming from other districts, can easily locate and utilize these important water sources. Failure to maintain access may affect your property insurance discounts. Thank you!
