March is National Reading Month, a month-long initiative dedicated to fostering a love of reading for learners of all ages. This celebration continues with school, library, and community efforts that celebrate literacy, imagination, and empathy.

Reading strengthens critical thinking, builds vocabulary, deepens understanding, and connects us to histories and perspectives beyond our own. Yet across the country, access to those stories is increasingly under threat.

At Caged Bird Legacy, protecting the right to read is a responsibility we take seriously. The Estate of Dr. Maya Angelou has signed on as a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit alongside the ACLU of Utah, challenging Utah’s “sensitive materials” law following the banning of ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ in Utah public schools.

This action affirms our unwavering commitment to literacy, freedom of expression, and ensuring that Dr. Angelou’s voice — and the voices of countless authors — remain accessible to future generations.

Because reading is more than a habit. It is a right. 📚
