FINALLY! More than three years after they began, plans to demolish the former New Market School’s gymnasium and use the space for a sports and activity facility are finally underway.

Having had a week to think about moving forward on an almost $750,000 plan or requesting a new design for a lesser facility, Council collectively endorsed the proposed expenditure in Monday evening’s regular session. George W. Reagan Construction’s low bid of $607,926 was approved.

“The vast majority of everybody in the city wants something that they can have that they can go to, that’s a nice community place where they can bring families,” said Alder Lori Stiner Tucker.

The City of New Market has finally received bids on demolishing its old gymnasium and replacing it with a multipurpose sports and activity pavilion.

Up for consideration at 7 p.m. today is a low bid of $607,926 from Knoxville’s George W. Reagan Construction. A Community Block Development Grant will provide $337,725 toward the project.

New Market would be left footing almost $282,925 to cover the gap for construction costs plus fees for engineering, administrative and other needs in the amount of $122,275, for a combined cost of $405,200 to the city.

Mayor Danny Whillock (pictured) noted that another option is to ask the engineering firm Cannon and Cannon Inc. to complete new plans that would reduce some of the current plan’s functionality, including dedicated pickleball courts and a grouping of a half-dozen picnic tables.

New Market Council will meet on this and the first reading of the Fiscal Year 2026-27 Budget at 7 p.m. today at City Hall, 1024 Volunteer Street. Full story at link in comments and in last week's print edition of The Standard Banner.
