When 8 of our volunteers went to Machu Picchu their guide asked them to make this humorous video and nobody knew why, until a few days later they received this video from him! Our hearts are warmed by the recognition of the positive impact we leave on the communities we seek to help.

Our Medial Team led by Dr. Evan Ransom recently returned from Ica, Peru! A team of 35 volunteers, including surgeons, anesthesia, OR, PACU and Speech & Language Pathology were in Ica for a week. They screened 84 patients and performed 52 cleft lip and palate surgeries for children in need. Many thanks to our large team of volunteers and to Jose Paredes, our gracious host!

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to inform you that we are hosting our 21st annual golf outing on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Waccabuc Country Club in Waccabuc, NY.

Each year at our outing we honor one or more of our volunteer medical staff who travel around the world with us for their outstanding contributions to furthering our mission.

This year we are honoring Doctor Maurine Heard, anesthesiologist, who has traveled with Healing the Children Northeast to Colombia, Peru and Africa to care for the children we treat.

Please join us Tuesday, June 9th at Waccabuc Country Club, either as a golfer or sponsor, or just come to our reception dinner and awards ceremony and enjoy a fun afternoon and evening.

We hope if you cannot attend, you will consider donating to our cause to support our efforts. All funds raised at this outing will allow us to continue our mission. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Robert D. Ryan - HTCNE Board President
&
Kathleen Smith McGovern - Co-Chair Golf Committee

Good afternoon! Last month, HTCNE Board Member & Volunteer RN, Susan Ketigian, traveled to Ukraine for the fifth time working at the military hospital with HTCNE & Razom For Ukraine. We are happy to participate in their "Co-Pilot" program, making it possible for Ukrainian doctors to learn from our surgeons. Susan poignantly describes the dynamic of risk and reward in her heart-driven volunteer work in her most recent letter. To read her captivating letter from this eventful HTCNE trip follow this link: https://htcne.org/2026/04/stories-from-ukraine/ and happy reading.

Here is an excerpt: “Aside from our busy work week, Lviv was attacked by drones on Tuesday, March 24th. The day started for us at 4am with the warning to seek shelter… We started the day a bit more tired, but everyone continued to do their jobs as usual. In the afternoon, while we were actively doing our cases, the alarm sounded again…”

Thank you, as always, for all for your support and donations for our medical teams abroad program!

Remember the Lost City?
We just received a lovely update that 80 pencil cases and bead boxes were picked up by Natalia, the school’s teacher. Last year there were 80 students at the school, and she’s hopeful that even more children will be enrolling when classes begin in February. She also shared how deeply thankful she is for the solar panels, which have made it possible to keep their refrigeration running.

By Juan Nogues, MD – ENT Resident Mount Sinai

This past October, a passionate team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, speech pathologists, and volunteers reunited in Santa Marta, Colombia, to bring hope to a group of kids who otherwise would be unable to receive the medical care they so desperately need.

The surgical team, led by Dr. Sean Alemi, included Drs. Lianne DeSerres, Mitchell Hagen, Mingyang Gray, and surgical residents Juan Nogues and Maria Mavrommatis. Over the course of the week, we operated on 47 children and young adults. Some of these patients have been seeing us since infancy and have received multiple surgeries over the years.

Throughout the week, moments of gratitude and inspiration were abundant, as patients and their families shared stories of overcoming the challenges of facial deformities, including social isolation and bullying. Some families traveled for days from remote places in the Amazonian jungle to see our team. Thanks to the help of the local UNIMA organization, the children received surgical care, housing, nutritional support, and comprehensive post-operative care during their recovery.

UNIMA is a local organization of dedicated mothers and grandmothers whose efforts provide essential support to our patients. Healing The Children NE works year-round with organizations like these to make missions like this possible.

It is one of the greatest privileges of our lives to be able to be of service to these families. The mission is further made special by the bonds we form with our team members throughout the years. It is rare to meet and work alongside such beautiful people who take time from their busy lives, families, and careers to come together for a common goal, to give back and to heal those who would otherwise get left behind.
