Northville Fire Department

Northville Fire Department We are a volunteer fire department located in the Northville district of New Milford, CT. In 1963 we purchased a 1941 Maxim fire truck from New Jersey.

A group of dedicated men and women, we serve the immediate residents of Northville but readily respond to requests for mutual aid to surrounding towns. After a fire destroyed William Burdick’s house on Crossman Road in 1962 a group of local men met at Jay Cole’s house on Sand Pit Road to discuss the need for a local fire department. After that, a meeting was held about once a month at the old Nort

hville School House. Further discussion was made on the pros and cons, and met with other fire departments to talk about how to get started. We found a parcel of land, and put up our own money to buy the lot where the Fire Department is now located. We started to raise additional funds while Donald Sheets, a local architect, drew up plans for the proposed building. Harry Cohen worked on getting a charter from the state, and we were off and running. We started digging the foundation for the building and held various fundraising events like chicken barbecues and our very first Christmas tree sale. We then started a country auction which attracted large crowds and became an annual event for years. We completed the original building and members attended the state fire training school in Burrville, Ct. in 1967 we purchased our first new fire truck, a John Bean high pressure pumper. Over the years we grew and continued acquiring new and used equipment. A few of the trucks being two used oil trucks, another new pumper, a new tanker and a new brush truck. We added two new bays to the building and in the following years we added or replaced more fire trucks and then added a large three bay addition. Today, we have 70 well-trained and equipped volunteers operating six pieces of equipment to help protect our town.

This morning, we made a quick splash at Northville Elementary by filling the dunk tank as part of their send-off celebration for the second grade students!

We hope today is full of smiles, laughter, and excitement from the students as they celebrate the start of summer and an important milestone in their school journey.

Thank you to Northville Elementary for inviting us to be part of the fun. We’re always grateful for opportunities to connect with our community in ways that go beyond emergency calls and public service.

Today, we had the opportunity to spend some time with students at New Milford High School’s Wellness Fair, giving them a hands-on look at what the fire service looks—and feels—like.

Students tried on junior firefighter gear, donned self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) packs, and got a firsthand appreciation for the equipment firefighters wear when responding to emergencies.

For perspective, a full set of turnout gear and an SCBA can weigh around 40 pounds. Add tools, hose lines, and other equipment, and that weight climbs quickly. Firefighters carry that load while working in challenging conditions where every task matters.

That’s why health and wellness are so important in the fire service. Physical fitness, mental resilience, and healthy habits help ensure we can perform at our best when our neighbors need us most.

A big thank you to New Milford High School for inviting us to be part of today’s event and for helping promote healthy lifestyles and community engagement among students.

After the town’s Memorial Day Parade, we invite family, friends, and members of the community to join us for a Celebration of Life honoring our brother, Harry.

Harry was a steady force within our department — someone who was always keeping busy, always looking for ways to help, and always present in the day-to-day life of the firehouse. He was proactive, dependable, and the kind of person you could sit down with and talk to about just about anything.

Harry had a calm presence about him. He embodied what it meant to live with purpose, to serve others quietly and faithfully, and to understand the value of finding peace along the way.

At our annual department dinner, Harry was posthumously honored as a Life Member — a reflection of the time, effort, and heart he gave to this department.

We hope those who knew and loved Harry will join us as we come together to remember, honor, and celebrate the life of our brother.

The officers and members of the Northville Volunteer Fire Department extend our deepest condolences to the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Company, the family of Past Chief Glenn Martone, and all who had the honor of knowing him.

A life dedicated to the fire service leaves a mark far beyond any one department. Past Chief Martone’s years of leadership, service, mentorship, and commitment to his community stand as a lasting example of what it means to serve with pride and purpose.

To our brothers and sisters in Brookfield: we stand with you during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Chief.

Last night, we had the honor of helping kick off New Milford’s 2026 Goat Days in style.

Brush 105 led the way for the annual Moonlight Run 5K, lighting the path for a great turnout of runners and community members. Engine 104 stood by for fire watch during a fantastic fireworks display, keeping things safe while the sky lit up over town.

Before the fireworks, the crew from Engine 104 took up a very important assignment—cheering on runners in the final stretch. Sometimes a few words (and a few laughs) go a long way—great job to everyone who came out and gave it their all!!

This is what it’s all about. Neighbors, families, and friends coming together, taking a break from the everyday, and enjoying what makes this community special.

We’re proud to be part of it—and grateful for every opportunity to serve both on the call and in the moments like these.

Today, we would like to wish a very happy birthday to one of our own, who is currently deployed abroad in service to our country.

Sergeant Andrew Meskill, birthdays are meant to be spent surrounded by family, friends, and the people who make home feel like home. This year, you are spending yours while serving far from home, in a place shaped by duty, distance, and conflict.

While Andrew may be away from the firehouse today, he is never far from our thoughts. His commitment to services both here and home and overseas, reflects the very best of what it means to answer the call.

Please join us in wishing him a safe, meaningful, and happy birthday. We look forward to welcoming him home when his deployment is complete.

Happy birthday, sir. Stay safe.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our department’s first Fire Chief, George “Curt” Fitch.

In a small community like the Northville district of New Milford, Chief Fitch was more than a leader—he was a founding force. Through his vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to service, he established a standard that has guided generations of fire chiefs and firefighters who have followed in his footsteps.

His legacy is not only remembered, but lived each day through the men and women who continue to answer the call.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In the coming days, our department will honor Chief Fitch with the respect and dignity he has earned. As we lay our community’s first Fire Chief to rest, we kindly ask for your patience and understanding with any traffic delays related to funeral services.

We remember a chief, a mentor, and the foundation of a legacy that continues to serve this community.

Rest easy, Chief. We have it from here
