We love celebrating animal awareness days here at NMPL! Even though International Whale Shark Day was yesterday, we couldn’t let it swim by without giving a massive shout-out to the biggest fish in the sea!
Did you know?
🐋They can reach lengths comparable to a school bus and weigh up to 60 tons.
🐋Every whale shark has a distinct pattern of white spots and stripes on its skin, much like a human fingerprint.
🐋 Despite their name and size, they are fish and sharks, not marine mammals.

On August 30, we celebrate the birthday of Mary Shelley, the visionary author whose imagination gave us one of literature’s most enduring creations: Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. A groundbreaking writer, a fascinating life, and a story that continues to inspire readers more than 200 years later.

Our library joins people around the world in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, whose remarkable life touched generations through music, storytelling, kindness, and an extraordinary commitment to giving back.

Did you know through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, millions of children have received books of their very own, nurturing a lifelong love of reading and opening doors to possibility.

We created this display to celebrate her many gifts as an artist, author, and storyteller, but especially to remember the gift she kept giving: the gift of a book, placed into a child’s hands.

Thank you, Dolly, for leaving the world a little more joyful, a little more generous, and a whole lot more well-read.
