During the evening of August 20, 2026, the Department responded to New Bridge for a report of a vehicle trapped in rising floodwater with occupants still inside. Severe weather conditions and rapidly accumulating runoff created hazardous conditions along the roadway.

Chiefs 30 and 301 arrived first and confirmed six individuals remained inside the stranded vehicle. Tac‑38 responded and promptly launched Marine‑2 to access the vehicle. Upon arrival at the scene, Chief 301, equipped in his swift‑water rescue suit, assisted Marine‑2 personnel in safely transferring all occupants into the rescue boat.

All six individuals were transported to a safe location and later provided courtesy transport to Police Headquarters, where they awaited pickup.

The Department reminds residents that driving into rising or standing water is extremely dangerous. Floodwater can conceal hazards such as downed power lines, open manhole covers, debris, and strong currents capable of sweeping vehicles off the roadway.

If your vehicle becomes surrounded by rising water, remaining inside is often the safest option until trained emergency personnel arrive. Swift‑water conditions can change rapidly, and responders are equipped to navigate these environments safely.

Friday 8/14/2026 the Depts Hazardous Materials Response team was requested into the Borough of Dumont for a reported large spill of an unknown chemical substance.
Chief 301 along with Squad 36 responded. Upon arrival the team was informed that a large 55 gallon drum had fallen over spilling its entire contents onto the ground.
Two of the squads Hazmat Techs did an initial size up and confirmed that the drum had fallen over and all of its contents had spilled onto the ground. Other team members were tasked with testing the chemical to verify if it was acidic or corrosive while another memeber researched the chemical and looked up its MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet).
The team along with County Hazmat quickly determined the substance to be a mostly oil based product that is used in Cement pouring and was not a hazard to the public.
New Milford F.D along with Dumont F.D proceeded to use over 25 bags of Absorbent Speedy Dry to help absorb the product before it could be cleaned up by a 3rd party company. The team remained on scene for about an hour before being released by Dumont Command.

This past Thursday night, members from Co. 1 conducted their monthly drill at the Middle School. Training focused on deep set‑back stretches, refining tactics for situations where a standard 200’ attack line won’t reach the seat of the fire. Crews also practiced deploying and operating the Blitzfire monitor, a key tool for delivering high‑volume water flow during larger incidents. The drill gave members valuable hands‑on time with equipment and strategies essential for complex fireground operations.

When floodwaters rise, conditions can change in seconds. Roads can become impassable, vehicles can become trapped, and water can quickly turn a routine storm into a life-threatening emergency. Responding to these situations requires technical training, and our volunteers receive swiftwater rescue training to safely operate in moving water and perform rescues.

For Thomas Mulligan, that training has been an important part of more than three decades of volunteer service. During one major flooding event, Mulligan helped rescue an eight-year-old child with special needs who was trapped with her family in their flooded home. It is a call he has never forgotten, and one that reinforced the importance of being prepared when residents need help most.

Just before 2:00 PM on August 12, 2026, the Department was dispatched to the intersection of New Bridge Road and The Boulevard for a reported two‑vehicle motor vehicle accident with injuries and a vehicle smoking.

34 Engine arrived first and established command, advising Central Dispatch that all occupants had safely exited their vehicles and that there was no active fire. 34’s crew immediately secured the batteries on both vehicles and applied speedy‑dry absorbent to mitigate a large fluid spill across the roadway.

One individual was transported to the hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries. 34 Engine remained on scene for approximately 35 minutes until both vehicles were removed by tow services and the roadway was cleared.

On August 11, 2026, the Department was requested into the Borough of Demarest for station coverage while Demarest operated at a multiple‑alarm fire. Chiefs 30 and 301, along with 34 Engine, responded. While en route to Demarest’s firehouse, units were redirected by Command directly to the scene to assist with fire operations.

34’s crew, working alongside both chiefs, operated inside the home performing extensive overhaul and extinguishing remaining hot spots. Members remained on scene for approximately 1.5 hours before being released by Demarest Command.

The teamwork and dedication demonstrated by all Department units at this difficult and dangerous incident reflect the professionalism and commitment of each department’s members and officers.

This morning 8/8/26, the Department was dispatched to the intersection of Main Street and Boulevard for a two‑vehicle motor vehicle accident with a reported fluid spill.

Chief 301 arrived first and confirmed a two‑car MVA with no injuries. Both drivers were already out of their vehicles upon arrival.

Engine 34 and Truck 31 responded. Crews applied Speedy Dry absorbent to mitigate the fluid spill and secured the battery on one of the vehicles to ensure scene safety.

Personnel remained on scene for approximately 30 minutes, providing traffic control and hazard mitigation until both vehicles were safely removed by tow services.
