Louisiana Appleseed is a networked nonprofit advocating for Justice, Opportunity, & Education.

Louisiana Appleseed uncovers and corrects injustices and barriers to opportunity through legal, legislative and market-based structural reform. Working with our huge pro bono network, we identify, research, and analyze social injustices; make specific recommendations; and advocate for effective solutions to deep-seated structural problems.

Louisiana has a wild array of ways to celebrate Labor Day Weekend: from Southern Decadence in New Orleans, to Weiner Dog Races in Bossier City, to the Shrimp & Petroleum Festival in Morgan City, and everything in between.

Before we all enjoy the time to get together and enjoy the company of friends and family—Louisiana Appleseed wants to recognize the American labor movement in its strides for justice and opportunity for laborers in our country. We honor that justice is not won, but maintained and protected through the constant efforts of organizers and laborers over many years across the country. While we enjoy our pick of ways to celebrate, may we raise a glass to how far the labor movement has come and their continued fight, and to the contributions of laborers to the achievements of Louisiana and the country.

Knowing about Heirs' Property is an essential tool in protecting generational wealth of Louisiana families. We're here to help! In three weeks Program Director of Louisiana Appleseed Ifeyinwa F. Davis, Ph.D., is hosting a virtual presentation on heirs’ property! Join us September 17 at noon for this free resource.

Dr. Davis leads projects across Louisiana Appleseed’s Justice, Opportunity, and Education programs. Did you have damage from Tropical Storm Arthur? Let us help you make sure recovery can go as smoothly as possible! From a recent FEMA News Release, here are some updates & tips for helping you repair faster:

After Louisianans apply for disaster assistance, FEMA may call to schedule an inspection of the damaged home or to gather more information before they process
the application. These calls may come from unfamiliar area codes or phone numbers.

It is important to answer the call. A FEMA inspection is required to determine whether a home is safe, functional and accessible after Tropical Storm Arthur. If an inspection cannot be scheduled, that may cause a delay in FEMA’s review of a homeowner’s or renter’s application.

There is no charge for an inspection. The inspector will have FEMA photo ID and your application number. FEMA representatives never ask for money. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a FEMA representative, but you aren’t sure, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 to verify the caller’s identity.

You have until Monday, Aug. 31, to apply for federal disaster assistance if you had damage or losses from the storm, and are a resident in one of these parishes:

• Avoyelles
• Lafourche
• Pointe Coupee
• St. Landry
• St. Tammany
• Terrebonne

The fastest way to apply to FEMA is online at DisasterAssistance.gov.
You may also use the FEMA mobile app or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.
Lines are open from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. for assistance in multiple languages. If you use a relay service, such as video relay (VRS), captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA your number for that service. You may also visit any Disaster Recovery Center to receive in-person assistance. To find one in your area, visit FEMA.gov/DRC.

Whether you're going to the World Cup this weekend or planning for world travel, a once in a lifetime experience deserves peace of mind for a lifetime. Louisiana Appleseed has resources to help.

Travel requires preparation, including knowing that your affairs are in order BEFORE you hit the pitch. Estate planning should be prioritized, especially if you are of retiring age or if you live in natural disaster prone areas (hurricane season, anyone?) These items help ensure peace of mind for whatever adventures life kicks your way.

To make sure your ready for anything, recommended essential documents to have gathered include: Deeds, Identification, Social Security Card, Proof of Residence (such as Utility Bills), Tax Receipts, Estate Planning Documents (Including Wills), Death Certificates, Obituaries, a Family Tree, and any other information on family members. A cellphone "walk-through" of home and property is also a great idea.
