SilenceIsViolence is an anti-violence campaign that was founded following the murders of musician Dinerral Shavers (d. January 4, 2007) in New Orleans. Dinerral and Helen were beloved friends, neighbors, and artists of the Bywater-Marigny district. Following these tragedies, Ken Foster, Helen Gillet, and Baty Landis decided to march to New Orleans City Hall to express publicly our grief and our di

smay at the lack of city leadership on the issue of violent crime. The January 11, 2007 March For Survival was attended by 5,000 concerned citizens, and SilenceIsViolence was founded. On that day, citizens from all parts of the city had a chance to speak directly to our leaders and each other about their fears in our communities and hopes for a safer and more equitable city.

“There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
This quote highlights the danger of passive acceptance. Remaining silent in the face of injustice is not neutrality—it is complicity. When truth is ignored, silence supports the wrong side. Speaking up may be uncomfortable, but silence can destroy integrity. King reminds us that courage is measured not only by action but by voice. Silence protects oppression, while truth challenges it. Sometimes, your voice is your greatest weapon.

Crime rates may be decreasing, but this past weekend, four families are mourning the loss of loved ones. Even one life lost is a tragedy we cannot accept. Celebrating statistics that do not truly reflect the pain experienced by these families is not a victory.

For families whose cases have gone cold due to no arrests, the pain remains fresh. Hearing from family members who say, “I haven't spoken to my detective since the murder happened,” only highlights the ongoing struggles they face.

Our thoughts are with all those affected during this difficult time.

Two women who worked as servers in New Orleans were killed in separate incidents over the weekend, with one suspect in custody and friends of the other victim mourning her loss.
