Good morning, Island dwellers! Fittingly, as St. John's Eve approaches, we actually drew Marie Laveau's card from our New Orleans Voodoo Tarot deck this morning.
This card occupies the space held by the High Priestess in the Smith-Waite deck. The High Priestess, like Marie Laveau herself, represents a connection to the Divine, with intuition and second sight helping to reveal important information here on this mortal, material plane.
In this image, Madame Laveau beckons to us, holding slightly open the curtain of cowrie shells that hang as a veil between us and the portal to her inner chamber, where she provides divination and other spiritual work and counsel. The curtains are a rich forest green. These natural elements reinforce the idea that Spirit is within us all, and everything around us — and nature, the natural world, is a big part of how we can communicate with Spirit. A gas lamp overhead illuminates the scene, promising that knowledge shared in our man-made world can be helpful and let us understand what's going on in our own lives, our own orbits.
We hope we'll see you this weekend at our head-washing ceremony!
