3,500 senior and disabled homeowners in Orleans Parish were overcharged roughly $2M this year because the tax freeze works like a floor here instead of a ceiling. Every other parish charges the lower value automatically.

Meanwhile, the 2027 Housing Trust Fund plan sends voter-approved dollars for small, neighborhood housing to a few large developments.

Louisiana regulators just decided the public does not need to see the math.

On a 3-1 party line vote, the Public Service Commission overruled an administrative law judge and let Meta keep its permanent job numbers and electricity usage sealed at the Hyperion data center in Richland Parish. Regulators will still weigh a plan for seven new power plants to serve it. They will just do it without the data underneath.

Here is why a housing coalition is watching a utility case: affordability has never been rent alone. It is rent plus utilities. Louisiana households already spend an outsized share of income on energy, and a PSC consultant already found that one Entergy plant purchase would effectively shift part of this project’s power costs onto residents. Every dollar added to the light bill leaves the same budget that covers the rent.

You cannot contest what you cannot see. PSC proceedings are open. Comment on the record and ask your commissioner where they stand on shielding households from data center costs.

A tax break that raises your tax bill is not a tax break.

Orleans Parish homeowners who are 65 and older or living with a disability can freeze their property assessment. It is supposed to be a ceiling that protects people on fixed incomes when property values climb. In Orleans Parish, it works in only one direction. When a home’s market value falls below the frozen value, the Assessor’s Office still taxes the frozen number. Homeowners in that position pay more than they would with no freeze at all.
