For families already working hard to make ends meet, preparing for the next storm can feel like one more expense they simply cannot afford. That’s why the United Way of Southeast Louisiana Resiliency Center - founded by Rebuilding Together New Orleans exists: to help families build stability and prepare during blue skies, so when gray skies come, they have the tools, resources, and support to weather the unexpected without sacrificing the stability they’ve worked hard to build.

In celebration of National Preparedness Month and the center’s first anniversary, and with support from Verizon, we’re helping more than 400 local households take an important step toward preparedness with FREE disaster preparedness kits filled with essentials like a first aid kit, flashlight, emergency radio, waterproof document bag, poncho, whistle, and more.

We’re grateful to Verizon for investing in preparedness and helping families have more choices when the unexpected happens. Because resilience should mean having the tools, resources, and support to face what comes next, not facing it alone.

In Southeast Louisiana, families know what it means to pick up the pieces after a storm, but they shouldn’t have to do it alone. One year after opening its doors, the United Way of Southeast Louisiana Resiliency Center - founded by Rebuilding Together New Orleans, is helping redefine what resilience looks like. In its first 12 months, the center has helped families prepare for emergencies, strengthen financial stability, and access essential resources, including hosting a back to school supply drive to help children start the school year strong. As the center marks its first anniversary, we’re grateful to the partners and neighbors who make this work possible, including Verizon, whose support helps families prepare for and respond to disasters so no one has to face the unexpected alone.

Healthy communities begin with people having the opportunity to live healthy, connected, and supported lives.

This story highlights the importance of access to care, support, and community connection in helping individuals and families, including ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households, move forward with dignity and hope.

At United Way of Southeast Louisiana, we work with partners across our region to help improve access to health resources, nutritious food, mental health support, and services that strengthen overall well-being.

Because healthier families help create stronger communities for all.

The United Way of Southeast Louisiana family is devastated by the news of Dolly Parton’s passing. Since 2008, United Way has proudly partnered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to provide children with books and foster a love of learning. We will be forever grateful for Dolly’s partnership and shared belief in making the world a better place.

As we celebrate our first anniversary, we’re honoring that promise by packing more than 400 FREE disaster preparedness kits, giving local households practical tools to protect their families, homes, and finances. A special thank you to Entergy for partnering with us to shine a light on the difficult choices ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households face every day, and to the New Orleans Saints for hosting the ALICE Impossible Choices: Poverty Simulation. Through this interactive experience, community and business partners gained firsthand insight into the realities of navigating life with limited resources, including making difficult decisions about employment, housing, transportation, healthcare, childcare, and other essential needs while managing unexpected barriers along the way. By deepening our understanding of these challenges, we can work together to strengthen pathways to financial security and prosperity for families across Southeast Louisiana.
