Today, we remember Hurricane Katrina — and the people who stayed.

When New Orleans was facing one of the darkest moments in its history, members of New Orleans EMS remained behind to care for patients, help evacuate the city, and continue providing emergency medical care under conditions most of us can only imagine.

Among those efforts was one of the largest helicopter evacuations of Americans since the Vietnam War, with NOEMS members including Deputy Chiefs Keller and Palmisano and Paramedic Cpl. Perry Lew helping lead an extraordinary effort to move people to safety.

And New Orleans EMS will never forget the day the New Orleans Fire Department saved New Orleans EMS.

When our own people needed help, NOFD was there. That bond — forged through Katrina and strengthened through every disaster since — remains part of who we are today.

We remember those we lost. We honor those who stayed. We thank those who came to our aid.

And we will never forget what this city, its first responders, and its people endured together.

21 years later, we still remember. We always will.

One year ago, we released The Ones Who Stayed: The Story of New Orleans EMS During Hurricane Katrina, and it has officially passed half a million views on YouTube.

A huge thank you to everyone who has watched, shared, and supported the documentary over the past year.

Most importantly, thank you to New Orleans Emergency Medical Services and everyone who trusted us to tell their story. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who sat down with us, shared their experiences, provided footage and photos, and helped bring this project together.

New Orleans EMS is heading to City Hall to urge NOLA City Council to pass M-26-192 and M-26-40. Both will help New Orleans EMS with retaining its current employee's and draw in new providers that want to serve this great city.

⛈️ Keep an eye on the sky today, New Orleans!

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, and some could bring heavy rain, strong winds and street flooding. If you come across water covering the roadway, don’t chance it — turn around, don’t drown.

🚗 Neutral Ground Parking is allowed until 7 PM today. If you’re moving your vehicle to higher ground, please watch for debris on the neutral ground and do not block intersections or streetcar tracks.

Call 9-11 for emergencies and 3-11 for non-emergencies.

Take it slow, stay weather-aware and look out for each other, NOLA. 💙

🚑🚒 A Great Day for Training!

Training never stops when it comes to being ready for the residents and visitors of New Orleans.

Today, our partners at New Orleans Fire Department joined New Orleans EMS for medical training, continuing to strengthen the skills and teamwork needed to respond when our community calls.

Meanwhile, AEMT Class 2026-2 has hit the ground running! EMT Morris and EMT Singleton-Wilkes spent time sharpening their IV and IO access skills as they continue building toward the next level of patient care.

🚨Missing Person Alert 🚨

The NOPD is urgently asking for the public's assistance in locating a critical missing person reported in the Seventh District.

Missing is 67-year-old Denise Henry
She was last seen on August 20, 2026 in the 5100 block of Bundy Rd. and no one has been able to reach her since. She was wearing a light-colored nightgown and is in need of medication that it's believed she did not take with her.

Anyone with information as to Henry's whereabouts is asked to contact Seventh District detectives at (504) 658-6070 or (504) 821-2222.

☀️ 9 Heat-Related Emergencies
💚 11 Cardiac Arrests | with 2 ROSC

These numbers represent more than calls—they represent patients, families, and neighbors who needed us.

A huge thank you to the dedicated men and women of New Orleans Emergency Medical Services and our public safety partners at New Orleans Fire Department and New Orleans Police Department who continue to show up, shift after shift, and provide exceptional care across our city. Outstanding work, team!

The heat isn’t letting up anytime soon. ☀️🥵

New Orleans, like much of the South, has seen very little relief from the persistent heat and humidity. While these conditions are challenging for everyone, New Orleans EMS crews continue to answer calls across the city, providing high-quality emergency medical care to our residents and visitors—no matter how high the temperature climbs.

As this heat continues, please take care of yourself and each other. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity when possible, seek shade or air conditioning, and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors. A simple check-in can make a difference.

A special thank you to Capt. Woods, EMT Lewis, and PIO Snyder for representing New Orleans EMS and working with the Associated Press to help bring awareness to the extreme heat and its impact on our community and first responders.

Our crews will continue to be there when New Orleans needs us. Please do your part to stay safe, stay hydrated, and look out for one another. 🚑

New Orleans EMS officials are warning residents and visitors to take precaution as the Southeastern U.S. deals with a prolonged heat wave with heat indexes above 100 degrees.

🎉What an incredible day to celebrate three outstanding members of the NOEMS family!

On Wednesday, Mayor Helena Moreno, alongside Deputy Mayor Harrison and Deputy Mayor Dr. Avegno, and EMS Chief Salmeron honored Lt. Matthew Happel, Paramedic FTO Beth English, and EMT Kevin Meaux for their incredible bravery.

When two victims fell multiple stories at the abandoned Plaza Tower, this crew didn’t hesitate. They entered a severely damaged and dangerous building, provided critical medical care, and worked together to carry the patients down multiple flights of stairs to safety.

It was dangerous. It was difficult. And they stepped up when it mattered most.

We couldn’t be prouder of Lt. Happel, Beth, and Kevin for their courage, teamwork, and commitment to taking care of our community. They represent the very best of NOEMS! 👏🚑
