Officer Claud and Officer Cabrera stopped by the 3 Cups Tarot booth while on foot patrol during today’s Hudson Valley Open Market on Main Street.

Foot patrols don’t always come with a tarot reading nearby. Days like today are a reminder of what makes New Paltz so special.

The New Paltz Police Department recently hosted Stephanie Harrigan, a speech-language pathologist with the NPCSD, and Brian Majestic, co-founders of Inclusive Minds LLC, for training on communicating with autistic individuals and others with speech differences during police interactions.

The training introduced Core Communication Boards that will be placed in every patrol vehicle to help officers communicate when spoken language may be limited. Our administrative staff will now train patrol officers so they are prepared to use the boards in the field.

We thank Stephanie and Brian for sharing their expertise and helping us strengthen our ability to serve every member of our community.

We are also offering Occupant with Autism stickers free of charge. The stickers can be placed on a vehicle or residence to let responding officers know an autistic person may be present. Stop by NPPD at anytime if you would like one.
