Yesterday, we took time to remember and honor those veterans who gave all for our country, but yesterday was also another important day for the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.

May 25th is National Missing Children’s Day. Did you know that with over 800 law enforcement agencies in the State of Ohio , the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office is one of only five (5) in the state of Ohio to be certified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in their Missing Kids Readiness Program. In fact, we were the 2nd agency to attain that and we prioritize our missing persons response from the 911 Telecommunicators, the Patrol and Detective Bureau when a child goes missing.

This program promotes best practices for responding to calls of missing, abducted and sexually exploited children. Agencies are recognized by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® for meeting essential training and policy elements demonstrating preparedness for responding to a missing child incident. This recognition demonstrates to the public the member agencies’ further excellence in public safety services and helps reinforce the public’s faith and confidence in the commitment of member agencies to safeguard children from abduction, sexual exploitation and other risks.

In our lobby, you will find a display that demonstrates our commitment and partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). This displays includes a “porch light” that stay on 24/7 until all missing children come home along with the story of Jacob Wetterling – a young boy that went missing in Minnesota in 1989.

Last evening, I had the honor to do something truly great. Inspiring. I was able to present three Indian Valley 4th grade students with awards for saving a toddler on May 8th after he had wandered out into traffic in the lot of Indian Valley Middle School. The three boys- Grayson Cummings, Max Davis and Kruz Reichman jumped into action were sitting on their bus when they saw the boy wandering and alerted the bus driver. The driver opened the door so they could run out to the rescue. The boys corralled the toddler and swiftly moved him away from cars. The toddler was returned to the parent with no injuries. Witnesses say that the child came very close to being struck by a car.

I attended the Indian Valley Schools board meeting where Dr. Ira Wentworth presented them with a school "Hero" award. All three boys were also awarded with the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association Life-saving award and a commendation for meritorious conduct from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office.

The future is in good hands with these young men who have proven they have great leadership qualities. These boys were proud to receive the awards but humble at the same time.

The boys also received some free goodies from Chick-fil-A in new Philadelphia and also a certificate for a free treat at Miller's creamery.

We will get out of this generation what we put into them. They are talented, caring and want to make the world a better place. These were just three very deserving examples.

Congratulations boys!

During National Police Week I have chosen to honor our entire team of 911 Telecommunicators, Corrections Officers and Deputy Sheriff's at one time......because we work as one and because we only function well as an equal team. No division is more important than the other. So this week, we proudly honor the dedicated men and women of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office — our 911 Dispatchers, Corrections Officers, and Deputy Sheriffs.

Behind every emergency call, every response, and every act of protection is a team of highly trained professionals working together with unwavering commitment to serve our community.

Our 911 Dispatchers are the calm voice in moments of chaos, providing life-saving communication and direction when seconds matter most.

Our Corrections Officers maintain safety and order with professionalism, vigilance, and compassion inside our correctional facilities every single day....and do so with very little visibility.

Our Deputy Sheriffs stand on the front lines, protecting the public, responding to emergencies, and putting themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe.

Each of these positions requires extraordinary dedication, constant training, teamwork, and sacrifice. Week after week, they put their skills, experience, and training into action to save lives, protect the public, and serve Tuscarawas County with honor and integrity.

To all members of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office — thank you for your service, your courage, and your commitment to this community. Your work does not go unnoticed, and during this National Police Week, we proudly recognize and appreciate all that you do.

LAWRENCE TWP., Tuscarawas County, OH – At approximately 1:00 a.m. on April 3, 2026, The Tuscarawas County Sheriff 911 center received a call regarding an unresponsive infant in full cardiac arrest at an apartment in the Township. 911 Dispatcher Michelle Colvin quickly and professionally answered the call and gave clear instructions to a family member on how to begin to perform CPR. Lawrence Township Deputy Adam Shaw was dispatched and arrived on scene in 56 seconds, sprinted to the residence and up the stairs and immediately took over CPR from the family member. An off-duty Bolivar firefighter who lived nearby, Gabriel Ash, also rushed to the scene and began helping Deputy Shaw.

After several rounds of CPR and the use of Deputy Shaw’s Ambu bag to provide oxygen, the infant began breathing on his own. Bolivar Fire Department personnel stabilized the child before transporting him to Aultman Hospital. While the entire incident remains under investigation, it is without a doubt that the actions of Dispatcher Michelle Colvin and the incredibly quick actions of Deputy Adam Shaw along with help from Firefighter Ash, saved this baby’s life.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Sheriff Orvis Campbell Presented 911 Telecommunicator Michelle Colvin and Deputy Sheriff Adam Shaw with Life Saving Awards and Commendations. The life saving awards come from the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association at the request of Sheriff Campbell. The awards were issued in a ceremony that took place at the Sheriff’s Office in the presence of the families of Colvin and Shaw. Lawrence Township Trustee Mike Haueter and County Commissioners Kristen Zemis and Mitch Pace also attended and congratulated the award winners.

This incident should also be viewed as a victory for Lawrence Township as they have contracted with the Sheriff’s Office since 1994 for additional law enforcement because response times in emergencies has always been a priority for the Trustees.

“These employees acted heroically that day and the community should be very proud. I am also certain that Lawrence Township’s commitment to paying for additional law enforcement ensured an unbelievably fast response time and helped save this young life”
