City of New Philadelphia, OH

City of New Philadelphia, OH A city embracing family, safety, education and future growth. The City of New Philadelphia has a history as rich and colorful as the valley that surrounds it.

In 1804, John Knisely founded our town just west of the site of Schoenbrunn, a Moravian Indian missionary town. Taverns and merchants thrived here as the village was a focal point for travelers and settlers from the east. With the construction of the Ohio-Erie Canal, New Philadelphia became a marketing center for agricultural products and the canal provided water power for mills. The coming of rai

lroads led to coal mining and, eventually, to steel and manufacturing. Some other important dates in New Philadelphia history include the following:

In 1808, Tuscarawas County was formed creating the rivalry between Dover and New Philadelphia over competition for the county seat. New Philadelphia was incorporated Feb. 12, 1833 with the first elections being held on May 6 of that year. B.M. Atherton was elected as Mayor. In 1854, the first railroad was completed. In 1895, the village was advanced to the status of city. The census of that year listed New Philadelphia at 5,673 residents. In 1898, the public square was paved providing our city's first paved streets. New Philadelphia Public Schools opened Sept. 9, 1900 with 5 school buildings and an enrollment of 1,267 students. Quaker Stadium held it's first game on Sept.29, 1928. New Philadelphia Post Office was built in 1929, modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia. There are several famous Ohioans that have ties to our city. New Philadelphia was home to Ohio Governor Donahey. President McKinley was known to visit our town, and John Glenn did his initial flight training at Harry Clever Field here in New Philadelphia. College football legend Woody Hayes coached the Quakers in the late 1930's.

Are you ready for some football? The New Philadelphia Youth Football Association will host its annual “Super Scrimmage” this Saturday, August 15th from 9am to 1 pm at the Southside Community Park. ~ Honoring Two Rotarians for Their Commitment to Improve Our City

Cary Gardner and Tom Police, two long-time members of the New Philadelphia Rotary Club, are moving out-of-town to be closer to family members. Their presence in our community will be missed but not forgotten. Their work maintained traditions and made New Philadelphia a better City.

Cary Gardner was a founding member of RTY, Inc., the non-profit organization responsible for the rides and concessions at Tuscora Park. He also served as the Rotary Club’s treasurer and was a driving force behind many of the club’s other community projects.

Tom Police led the effort to restore and improve the Storybook Lane displays at Tuscora Park. And he helped establish the Rotary Club’s American flag program, which lines our downtown and neighborhood streets with the Stars and Stripes each year.

On behalf of the residents of New Philadelphia, I want to publicly thank them for their service and their leadership.

~ An Ohio Dept. of Development Grant Helps the City with Building Demolition

New Philadelphia will receive a portion of the $230,000 grant awarded to Tuscarawas County for demolition of dilapidated residential and commercial structures. According to City Code Administrator Joshua Mathias, our funding will be used to tear down structures at 125 Ashwood Lane NW and 1358 5th Street NW. The owner of the Ashwood Lane property plans to use it for parking. The DoD grant comes from the Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program.

~ NPact Members to Steer a Downtown Marketing Plan Project

Members of the New Philadelphia Advancing Our Community Together (NPact) organization have volunteered to develop a downtown marketing plan being funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission’s READY Grants to Grow program and a contribution to the program from American Electric Power. The City provided $2,500 in matching funds from the Mayor’s economic development budget. With the grant funding, the Tuscarawas County Economic Development Corporation hired KZR Design of Cincinnati to assist in the marketing plan’s development. New Philadelphia native Michael McInturf is on the KZR team. A virtual meeting between all those involved will be held later this week to get the process started.

~ Celebrating Achievements…

Last week, the Medicine Center Pharmacy celebrated its 50th anniversary. I visited its store on West High Avenue to present the staff with a mayoral proclamation to celebrate the milestone.

Over the past weekend there was another achievement…Carmie Martinelli celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends. Congratulations Carmie! You have been an inspiration and blessing to all who know and love you.
