New Philadelphia Fire Department EMS responded to a call for a potential stroke patient and promptly identified stroke symptoms on scene. A pre-hospital stroke alert was activated to Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital (CCUH) Emergency Department. Upon arrival, the ED physician confirmed the stroke alert, and the patient was rapidly taken to CT and evaluated by the telestroke neurologist.
The patient was determined to be a candidate for TNK, which was successfully administered in just 24 minutes, well under the 30-minute benchmark.
The CCUH Emergency Department extends sincere appreciation to the New Philadelphia FD EMS crew for their quick assessment, early notification, and continued dedication to exceptional stroke care.

Today we had the honor of celebrating Firefighter Appreciation Day with some incredible local firefighters. We stopped by with cupcakes as a small thank-you for the big sacrifices they make every single day.

This post is shared from a Cleveland Clinic EMS page. I can't say enough how privileged we are to be able to work alongside these guys!!

The NPFD EMS pre-notified CCUH ED of a potential stroke patient. This patient has a history of a TBI and a spinal cord injury. With this history his baseline deficits can make it difficult in distinguishing new verses old/baseline stroke signs and symptoms! This crew (Jacob Ross, Brett Putnam, Garrett Davis) all recognized that the symptoms that the patient had were not his baseline and proceeded with a stroke alert to the ED. Upon arrival, the patient was met by the ED team and imaging was ordered and completed. While the CT scan did show an acute infarct, the CTA also showed a large vessel occlusion (LVO). The patient was then auto launched to Akron General for further imaging and possible thrombectomy.

CCUH stroke leadership wants to thank and give our appreciation to this crew for their quick assessment and identification of stroke signs/symptoms in a patient with a complex history!
