The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County (DOH-Pasco) is monitoring rabies among wild animals in the area. This is in response to two confirmed cases of rabies in raccoons that were on the east side of Pasco County on July 30, 2026. All residents and visitors should be aware that rabies may be currently present in the wild animal population.

People and domestic animals should always avoid physical contact with wild animals (e.g., raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, coyotes), which carry a higher risk of human exposure and a need for rabies post-exposure treatment. If you are exposed to rabies, receiving appropriate treatment after exposure will protect you from the risk of rabies.
Take the following precautions to prevent rabies exposure:
• Immunize your pets and livestock based on your veterinarian’s recommended schedule.
• Keep pets under direct supervision and on a leash, and keep livestock secured on your property. If an animal bites your pet or livestock, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately and contact Pasco County Animal Services at 813-929-1212.
• Avoid contact with wild or stray animals. Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract them with outdoor pet food, open garbage cans, or other sources of food. If you have been bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal, seek medical attention, and report the injury to DOH-Pasco by calling 352-521-1450, Option 4.
• Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home; instead contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
• Call your local animal control agency to report stray animals in your neighborhood. Contact Pasco County Animal Services at 813-929-1212.
• Prevent wildlife, including bats, from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, schools, and other similar areas where they might come in contact with people and pets.

For more information on rabies, please visit FloridaHealth.gov/Rabies or contact DOH-Pasco at 727-619-0300.

The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County (DOH-Pasco) advises residents there has been an increase in mosquito-borne disease activity in areas of Pasco County. Several sentinel chickens have tested positive for West Nile virus infection. DOH-Pasco and Pasco County Mosquito Control continue surveillance and prevention efforts.

DOH-Pasco reminds the community to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes by taking these basic precautions to follow the "Drain and Cover" principles to reduce mosquito production and protect themselves:
• Drain standing water around homes and businesses at least once a week, including flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths, pet water bowls, gutters, tarps, pool covers, and any containers that collect rainwater.
• Cover exposed skin by wearing long sleeves and pants when practical and apply a US EPA-registered insect repellent according to the product label. Ensure window and door screens are in good repair to help keep mosquitoes outside.

The Department continues to conduct statewide surveillance for mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus infections, Eastern equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, malaria, chikungunya, and dengue. Residents of Florida are encouraged to report dead birds to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s site.

In coordination with DOH-Pasco, Pasco County Mosquito Control District (PCMCD) has increased mosquito surveillance and targeted control efforts in the affected areas.

Residents experiencing unusually high mosquito activity are encouraged to report concerns to PCMCD. Protecting public health is a shared responsibility, and community participation by eliminating standing water and taking personal protective measures remains one of the most effective ways to reduce mosquito populations and the risk of mosquito-borne illness.

For more information, visit the Department’s mosquito prevention webpage, contact your county health department, or visit Pascomosquito.org.
