Are you bored of sitting at home during the Stay-At-Home Order? Compete in your own backyard with the SLF Egg Scraping Challenge! Spotted lanternfly eggs are close to hatching in a month and they are a costly, destructive insect that needs to be controlled. While we are maintaining social distance to prevent the spread of COVID-19, why not stop the spread of an invasive pest in your own backyard?

Here a few tips to help you scrape. Eggs are typically on the underside of branches and higher up in the tree canopy. Please only get what you can reach, do not hurt yourself. They are typically on plants such as Tree of Heaven, Maple, Cherry, Willow, Grape, and other smooth-barked trees. Finally, make sure you smash the eggs with gloves or a shoe or put them in alcohol once you scrape them. No eggs should survive!

Now get scraping and share the number of eggs you have scraped to see if anyone can beat you.

With this warm weather, now is a great time to scrap those invasive spotted lanternfly egg masses off your trees. Scrap them into a plastic bags with some hand sanitizer to kill the larvae inside the eggs. Look for areas depicted in the picture which looks like dry smeared mud on the side of a tree. Scrapping now means less of these guys in the spring.

Be careful with ice on rivers and streams. The thickness of this ice is typically not as deep as pond or lakes because it is flowing water so stay off if you can. Also, during warm ups and rain events watch for floating ice and ice jams that can cause streams and creeks to rise very quickly and result in flooding concerns.
