The City of Providence Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, the Art in City Life Commission, and Providence Parks invite professional artists to live in residence on park grounds to create fresh new ways for visitors to experience two of Providence’s parks. Awarded artists will have the opportunity to live in homes owned by Providence Parks for up to two years at the low rate of $600 per month plus utilities! In exchange for this exciting housing opportunity, artists will produce twelve public engagement activities and a permanent work to be donated to the City. This opportunity is open to Rhode Island artists across all media and disciplines. The application deadline is September 30 2019.

The City of Providence invites professional artists to live in residence on Park grounds to create fresh new ways for visitors to experience two of Providence’s most unique and underutilized parks. Selected artists and their families will be supported through housing and the possibility of partnering with City staff and programs.

Awarded artists will receive a two-year residency at one of three available Parks-owned properties located at Esek Hopkins Homestead, and Wanskuck Park. In exchange for this subsidized housing, artists-in-residents are asked to host twelve public exhibitions or performances to engage with park visitors throughout their time in residence.

Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) Seeking Part-Time Teaching Artist!

PPAC is hiring innovative and creative part-time teaching artists with an interest and training in Musical Theater to work on their new Disney Musicals in Schools program.

Disney Musicals in Schools partners affiliate Teaching Artists with classroom teachers to build a tradition of musical theater performance with the goal of building sustainable theater programs in under-resourced public elementary schools through residency-based professional development for collaborating classroom teachers.

17-week residency between January and May 2020, 3-hours a week. See application details in images.

Here is another one of the leaders of the conference, Michelle Nugent, who will be speaking about how to develop a teaching artist practice.

Michelle Nugent is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and community arts facilitator based in Providence, RI. She received her BFA in Fine Arts from The College of New Jersey in 2009 and her MFA in Community Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2013. She is the Program Manager of Providence ¡CityArts! for Youth, a community arts organization with a mission to ensure that all Providence youth have access to high-quality arts programs. Through social justice based art education and creative youth development, Michelle works with teaching artists and young artists at ¡CityArts! to celebrate the arts as a means to empowerment, community building and social change.

Aarav Sundaresh is a visual arts educator committed to activating student voice and honoring personal experience through creative practice. Aarav believes in the importance of reflecting on our own experiences to build awareness of our roles and impact as educators, and to build connection and understanding with the youth populations we serve. He has worked at both middle and high school levels in Providence, and has been involved with youth development organizations including New Urban Arts and Youth Pride, Inc., and community organizations including The Rhode Island Foundation's Equity Action and the National Trans Educators Network. Aarav is South Asian (second gen in the United States), q***r and trans, and lives with his spouse and two kids.

Here’s one of the artists that will be giving a Pecha Kucha style presentation about the work that they do.

Eli Nixon builds portals and gives guided tours to places that don’t yet exist, or already exist but call for imaginative intervention. Their performances and installations occur street corners and stages. Eli also creates theater with schools, senior centers, and addiction recovery and mental health programs. They've been an Arts Mentoring Fellow and Summer Scholar at New Urban Arts (2012-2014, 2018), coordinator of PRONK parade community partnerships (2013-2016) and co-founder/facilitator of The Anti-Racism Working Group for White Parents at The Gordon School (2015-present). Eli’s current creative efforts include identifying opportunities to dismantle Manifest Destiny, foster intra and interspecies kinship, and co-parenting a 10 year old human.
