PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Tuesday, September 1, at approximately 9:23 AM, the New Providence Fire Department was alerted by Union County Regional Communications for a reported structure fire in a two-story mixed use commercial building in the Borough's downtown. Based on initial reports and multiple 9-1-1 calls, a first alarm was transmitted. Car 1 arrived on scene approximately four minutes later and confirmed a working fire in a first-floor business, prompting the transmission of a second alarm.
The first arriving New Providence engine company stretched an initial hose line and conducted an interior fire attack, containing the fire to the area of origin and preventing further extension. The fire was placed under control approximately 40 minutes after the initial dispatch.
In addition to New Providence, fire departments from City of Summit Fire Department, Berkeley Heights Fire Department, Chatham Township Volunteer Fire Department, Scotch Plains, Springfield FMBA local 57 and Plainfield Fire Department assisted on scene with searches, overhaul, and ventilation operations. The Westfield FMBA Local 30, Fanwood Fire Department, and Cranford Fire Department Departments provided coverage for the Borough during the incident in the event of any additional emergencies.
Also operating on scene were the New Providence Police and New Providence Office of Emergency Management, Union County Fire Mutual Aid Coordinators, and Union County Emergency Services EMS & Hazmat. The New Providence Fire Department extends its appreciation to all the responding agencies and personnel for their assistance and support.
There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Union Count Fire Investigation Task Force but is believed to be accidental in nature.
