***TRAFFIC ALERT: ACADEMY STREET BECOMES ONE-WAY SEPTEMBER 1***

Academy Street will become ONE-WAY SOUTHBOUND, from Elkwood Av to Springfield Av beginning Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The change is being made in connection with the construction of the Borough’s new Police Building. During construction, the New Providence Police Department is operating from its temporary location at 1 Academy Street.

The one-way traffic pattern will help provide a safer and more orderly flow of traffic around the temporary Police Department facility.

Please remember:

🚗 Please follow all posted signs and use caution while traveling through the area.

🚨 TEMPORARY POLICE HEADQUARTERS RELOCATION 🚨

The New Providence Police Department will be temporarily relocating to 1 Academy Street. When visiting the temporary headquarters, please use the main entrance directly on Academy Street and do not use the Springfield Avenue or parking lot entrances.

The new Police Department headquarters is currently anticipated to be completed and occupied in fall 2028. Until then, 1 Academy Street will serve as the Department’s home, allowing our officers and staff to continue serving the community without interruption. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this transition!

Today marked Day 5 and the grand finale of our 2026 Junior Police Academy! Our recruits officially crossed the finish line of a packed, emotional, and unforgettable week.

We kicked off the morning with an incredible surprise visit from retired Detective Sgt. Chad Wilson, the legendary former leader of this very academy program! Following that, Instructor Cpl. Bruder took the stage for a powerful and detailed presentation on standard field sobriety testing and the dangers of impaired driving. To experience the effects firsthand, the kids got to wear our "Fatal Vision" goggles themselves, quickly realizing how a simple task like catching a ball becomes nearly impossible when impaired. To truly drive the lesson home, recruits watched the impactful "Every 15 Minutes" video produced by New Providence High School, showing the heart wrenching real-world consequences of driving under the influence.

The energy shifted back to high gear when the Union County SWAT Team rolled in, giving the kids an exclusive, hands-on look at their specialized tactical vehicle and gear. Thank you for a fantastic presentation SWAT!

Finally, the moment everyone was waiting for arrived: our formal Graduation Ceremony! Thank you to our phenomenal 2026 Junior Police Academy Recruits. You were an absolute pleasure to train, and we are so proud of you! We wish you a happy and successful upcoming school year. We hope you carry the core lessons of integrity, respect, and teamwork with you into everything you do! 🚓

Yesterday marked Day 4 of our 2026 Junior Police Academy, and our recruits officially survived another packed day! We started the morning with intense push-up and sit-up competitions, proving that while recruits usually exercise their right to complain about PT, they will gladly power through the pain if bragging rights are on the line.

The excitement reached new heights when the New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit flew in, giving the kids an exclusive look inside one of their helicopters. It was a tough act to follow, but the New Providence Volunteer Fire Department arrived to steal the spotlight with an epic presentation on fire safety and a close up look at all of the equipment they use. They headed home exhausted and inspired, and they are officially "fired up" to crush graduation today!

Yesterday marked Day 3 of our 2026 Junior Police Academy, and our recruits started the day strong with the daily flag salute and marching, setting the perfect tone before heading out for an unforgettable day at the Elizabeth Police Department! We packed the day with action, starting with an epic ESU demonstration showcasing their specialized gear, followed by a full headquarters tour. The recruits got a firsthand look at the evidence room, dispatch center, detective bureau, fi****ms range, advanced policing tech, the motorcycle traffic unit, and the high-flying drone unit. We even toured the real jail cells, which proved to be the ultimate motivation for everyone to stay on their absolute best behavior.

A massive, heartfelt shout-out goes to all the incredible members of the Elizabeth Police Department for welcoming our academy with open arms and taking the time to show off all of their specialized units. The day left our recruits deeply inspired, happily wiped out, and absolutely blown away by all the incredible units we visited. We made it back in one piece and are ready to bring that same energy into Day 4 today!

Yesterday marked Day 2 of our 2026 Junior Police Academy, and our recruits survived and completely crushed another packed day! We started the morning strong with physical training, burning off some serious energy with a morning dose of pushups and sit-ups that definitely woke everyone right up.

Highlighting the morning were two fantastic presentations: first from the Union County Crime Scene Unit, where recruits put on their detective hats to locate evidence at a "mock crime scene" and learned all about DNA transfer. Right after, the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit stole the show with a fantastic demonstration of their four-legged partners in action.

We capped off the afternoon with a massive treat: a presentation by the Secret Service, who explained their mission and even showed off one of the official vehicles used to transport the President! Our recruits asked incredible questions and practically lined up to shake the agents' hands. Thanks to their fresh CSI lesson on DNA transfer, the kids were convinced that through the magic of cellular transfer, they basically shook hands with the President himself. Everyone left inspired, mostly intact, and ready to dominate Day 3 today!

Yesterday marked the beginning of our 2026 Junior Police Academy, and our new recruits absolutely crushed it! We started the morning strong with physical training, drill, and marching, mostly ensuring everyone knew their left foot from their right.

Highlighting the day were two fantastic presentations: first from our special guest Lt. Sperlazza with NJ Transit, and next from our very own New Providence EMS crew. Thank you both for coming out and inspiring the recruits!

We capped off the afternoon with a game of dodgeball, which showed us that these recruits have fantastic teamwork skills, and even better reflexes. Everyone made it out in one piece, and we are absolutely ready to crush Day 2 today! 🚔🚨
