Today, many of our members traveled to Albany to stand alongside thousands of union members from across New York State at the Tier 6 rally. The event brought together public employees, labor leaders, and supporters to highlight the importance of strengthening and improving the Tier 6 retirement system for the long-term stability of the public workforce.

We’re proud of our members who took the time to represent our department and our union. Showing up and standing together is how we make sure the voices of firefighters and public servants continue to be heard.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Firefighter Kevin McDermott answered a call that didn’t come over the radio.

Recently, Kevin stepped up to donate bone marrow, not for recognition and not for attention but because someone out there needed a second chance. That decision gave a family more time together, more birthdays, more memories. That’s what this job is really about.

As a proud member of Local 273, Firefighter McDermott represents the kind of commitment firefighters carry with them 24/7. We train to run into burning buildings, perform complex rescues and provide medical aid but service doesn’t stop when the shift ends.

This life-saving match was coordinated through the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), whose team handled every step of the process and made it possible for Kevin to help someone he may never even meet.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a donor, take the step. You could be someone’s match. You could be someone’s miracle.

IAFF Local 273 is proud to have you as a member, Kevin.

That’s the brotherhood. That’s the job. That’s who we are.

NRFD RETIREMENT: New Rochelle Firefighters Local 273 would like to congratulate Firefighter Michael Yannuzzi on his well-earned retirement after 35 years of Fire Service.

Over the course of his career, FF Yannuzzi earned three Letters of Commendation, six Unit Citations, and a Life Saving Award. In the firehouse, he led by example and was always willing to share his experience and knowledge with the younger guys coming up. If you asked a question, he made sure you walked away better prepared.

On the fireground, Mike had great instincts and a calm, steady presence you could count on. Spending his entire career at “The Big House,” there isn’t much this city could throw at him that he hadn’t already seen. He gave everything he had to this job and was a true asset to the department.

Thank you, FF Yannuzzi, for the years of dedication, the lessons passed down, and the commitment you showed every tour.

Enjoy a long, healthy, and well-deserved retirement, Firefighter Yannuzzi
