Universal health care has existed in various forms for more than a century.

Germany introduced the world's first national health insurance system under Otto von Bismarck in 1883, while the United Kingdom established the National Health Service in 1948. Today, countries achieve universal coverage through a variety of models, including national health services, social health insurance, single payer systems, and regulated private insurance.

As this map shows, universal health coverage is now the norm across most of Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and much of Latin America. By contrast, many countries in Africa and parts of Asia are still expanding access, while the United States remains the only high income country without a universal health care system.

It should be noted that universal health care does not necessarily mean health care is completely free. Many countries still require copays, deductibles, or insurance contributions, and most allow private hospitals and private insurance to operate alongside the public system.

Universal health care simply means that everyone has access to essential medical services without facing severe financial hardship.
