🔥 Fort Berthold Reservation Fire Weather Update – May 8, 2026

Today, Mountrail and McKenzie Counties are in Extreme Fire Danger, while Dunn and McLean Counties are in Very High Fire Danger. đźš« No burning is allowed due to dangerous fire conditions across the reservation.

🌤 Today’s Fire Weather:
• Partly sunny skies with a slight chance of rain showers and thunderstorms
• Temperatures ranging from 70–75 degrees 🌡
• Minimum humidity between 22–27% 💨
• Northwest winds 15–20 mph with transport winds around 25 mph 🌬
• Excellent smoke dispersion conditions

🔥 Extreme Fire Danger means fires can start very easily, spread rapidly, and become difficult to control. Any spark from equipment, vehicles, chains, ci******es, or open flames could quickly turn into a fast-moving wildfire.

⚠️ Very High Fire Danger means fires can still start easily and spread quickly, especially in dry grass and brush. Outdoor burning is not allowed, and extra caution should be used with anything that can create a spark.

đźš’ TAT Fire Management asks the public to avoid all outdoor burning and use extreme caution with any activities involving heat, sparks, or open flames.

📞 Please report any smoke or wildfire activity to 911 immediately.

🛑 One less spark, one less wildfire.
📲 Stay safe and continue checking your local county burn restrictions and ND Response for updates.

The Lewis and Clark Trail Survey 2026 Project - The Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College is currently conducting a large-scale survey providing annual assessments of mammal populations along the Lewis and Clark Trail. It has been 250 years since the Lewis and Clark Expedition and comparing wildlife that naturally roamed these parts of North Dakota to present day findings will provide insight for wildlife conservation and research. Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College is collaborating with the MHA Parks and Reserve program/TAT National Park, TAT Fish & Wildlife Division, and MHA GIS Department at setting up trail cameras on Fort Berthold Reservation in efforts to capture wildlife, provide survey data sharing and research for the summer months.
We are very appreciative of this collaboration and can't wait to view photos from the park trail cameras soon!

🔥 Fire Weather Update – Fort Berthold Reservation

Monday, May 4, 2026

The entire Fort Berthold Reservation remains in HIGH fire danger today. (Mountrail, McKenzie, Dunn, Mercer, McLean).

🟡What HIGH Fire Danger Means:

When fire danger is HIGH, fires can start easily from most causes. Once a fire starts, it can spread quickly, especially with strong winds. Fires may become difficult to control if they are not caught early.

With today’s northwest winds of 25–30 mph, even a small spark can move fast through dry grass and light fuels. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

🌬️ Today’s Weather Conditions

•Sky: Partly sunny with a slight chance of rain/snow showers (20%)
•Temperatures: 45–50°F
•Relative Humidity: 32–37%
•Winds: Northwest 25–30 mph (windy conditions)
•Smoke Dispersal: Excellent

⚠️ Fire Behavior Concern:

Even with cooler temperatures, strong winds + dry fuels will allow fires to:

•Start easily💥
•Spread quickly across grass and open land🌾
•Become difficult to control‼️

Wind will be the main driver of fire spread today.

đźš« Safety Reminder:
•Secure trailer chains
•Avoid parking in tall grass
•Report fires immediately

Follow and stay up to date with your county burn restrictions.

Stay alert — windy conditions can push a fire fast, even on cooler days. 🔥

🚨Fire Weather Watch in effect for Wednesday, April 22, 2026, for McKenzie and Dunn Counties.

The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch due to strong winds and very low relative humidity.

• Winds: Southeast 20–25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph
• Relative Humidity: As low as 10%
• Timing: Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening

Any fires that start can spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

Please avoid any burning activities and use extreme caution with anything that could spark a fire. Report any smoke or fire activity to TAT Dispatch or your local county immediately.‼️

Stay alert for updates and possible Red Flag Warnings.📲
