NEW ULM - Brown County Historical Society's (BCHS) U.S.-Dakota War remembrance week continued Thursday, with a presentation on the Dakota attack on Lake Shetek.

In August 1862, Lake Shetek, in Murray County, was home to approximately 45 White settlers. Their location near Dakota territory and relative isolation made them an early target, and hostilities broke out during the Start of the U.S.-Dakota War.

Wednesday, as part of the Brown County Historical Society’s (BCHS) U.S.-Dakota War remembrance week, the museum hosted a presentation on one of the final battles of the conflict, Wood Lake.
The Battle of Wood Lake took place a month after the two Battles of New Ulm and the start of the U.S.- Dakota conflict on Sept. 23, 1862. The battle occurred in Yellow Medicine County, a few miles south of Granite Falls.
Denny Dahmes of the Wood Lake Battlefield Preservation Association (WLBPA) gave a presentation on the battle and its significance. He described the Battle of Wood Lake as the story of an attempted Dakota ambush on a U.S. military force that was foiled by providence when U.S. soldiers, foraging for food, sprang the trap early.

NEW ULM - Brown County Historical Society Program Coordinator Christina Koester led a downtown walking tour passionately detailing U.S.-Dakota War sites to 20 individuals Thursday.
Tours and other historical activities will continue as part if the US-Dakota War remembrance week.

Housed inside New Ulm's beautifully restored 1910 post office, the Brown County Historical Society MN is a historic landmark that is home to three floors of exhibits that span centuries—from the region's earliest history and Indigenous cultures to immigration, the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, and the people who shaped Brown County.
