One thing was always certain: the dogs of Gist Settlement would be the first to welcome you. Tails wagging, eyes watching, and hearts loyal to the land they loved. Friendly enough to say hello… but always making sure you knew whose territory you were on

In this old, torn newspaper clipping, we found the heart of Gist Settlement: a young mother and her children, building a life on freedom’s soil. Generations survived here not just because they were given land, but because families like hers made it home.

We just published a short story on the powerful role of Black mothers in the settlement.

This land looks different now than it did when this photo was taken just five years ago—but the memories here don’t fade with time. One of the clearest is the image of Paul Turner on the front porch, a dog or cat curled in his lap, and a horse wandering nearby. The land changed but the spirit of those moments remains.

Freedom wasn’t easy

Here’s a truth that rarely gets talked about:

Not everyone who was freed through Samuel Gist’s will stayed in Ohio.

Some returned to Virginia.

When freed people arrived in Ohio, they faced raw wilderness, harsh weather, unfamiliar land, and no established community support.

For some, returning to the place they knew, even with the risks, felt safer than trying to build a life from nothing in an unfamiliar frontier.

Those who stayed built what we now know as Gist Settlement. Their perseverance is the reason descendants still walk this land today.

Why did Samuel Gist do it?

People still raise their eyebrows when they learn this:

In 1815, Samuel Gist, a wealthy Englishman who owned hundreds of enslaved people in Virginia decided in his will that they should all be freed.

No one really knows why.

It wasn’t common. It wasn’t encouraged. Most wealthy slaveholders did the opposite, they passed enslaved people down to their children like property.

Yet Gist arranged for freedom AND ordered that money be set aside to help relocate them to a free territory.

Historians still debate it.

Was it morality?
Pressure from abolitionist circles?
Guilt?
Business strategy?
A late-life change of conscience?

We may never know.

What do YOU think motivated him?

This part of our history still blows our minds every time we share it…

Samuel Gist lived in England, yet his wealth came from land and enslaved labor in America. But in his final act, his will demanded that they be freed and cared for after his death in 1815.

From that decision… came land… came community… came Gist Settlement.

This photo is a reminder of why Gist Settlement’s story matters. 💚

Here are two of our board members, long before board meetings, just kids growing up connected to this land and legacy.

THIS is the generational thread we protect.
THIS is why preserving Gist Settlement is personal.
