New Waverly Firefighters are attending the Texas Interagency Wildfire Academy in Conroe this week. They are joining Firefighters from all over the Nation, working to sharpen their wildland firefighting skills.

🚒 The 27th Annual Texas Interagency Wildfire Academy is officially underway in Conroe!

On May 5, 2026, TIWA kicked off at its new home—the Lone Star Convention & Expo Center—bringing together more than 300 firefighters from across Texas and the nation for top‑tier wildland fire training.

For over two decades, TIWA has been a cornerstone of wildfire preparedness in Texas, and this year’s academy continues that tradition with 20+ courses ranging from entry‑level wildland firefighting to advanced incident management. These nationally accredited, NWCG‑aligned classes help ensure our firefighters are ready to protect lives, property, and Texas’ natural resources.

Over the next week, we’ll be showcasing behind‑the‑scenes looks at several of these classes—so stay tuned!

Our Firefighters assigned to the Texas Panhandle will be returning home this weekend!

Their 14 days assignment saw them working on the fire lines at two major wildfires. A fresh crew from the MCESD #2 - Montgomery Fire Department will be taking their place.

All of the costs for these deployments are borne by the State, while the training and experience leaves our Firefighters better prepared to respond to wildfires here at home.

Today (4/23), winds upwards of 30 mph will be present in the High Plains and Caprock, paired with relative humidity values below 10% and temperatures in the mid-90’s. Fire potential will be moderate to high, with low potential for a large fire exhibiting high resistance to control.

Friday (4/24) and Saturday (4/25), hot and dry conditions persist in these areas, and will continue drying surface fuel. However, wind speeds will moderate below 20 mph.

The next fire weather trigger is forecast to emerge on Sunday (4/26) across the High Plains, Caprock, and western Rolling Plains.
