Mission Statement: The mission of the New York Mills Public Library is to provide and promote a variety of public library materials and services in varying formats to meet the educational, informational, recreational, and cultural needs of people of all ages in the New York Mills community. Vision Statement: The New York Mills Public Library strives to enrich the quality of life in our community by being a welcoming resource for literature, information, and technology. Basic information and an ID are required. Once you (or your child) have a Library card, you have full access to the New York Mills Public Library, libraries within Viking Library System (Browns Valley, Douglas County, Elbow Lake, Fergus Falls, Glenwood, Hancock, Morris, Pelican Rapids, Perham, Wheaton, VLS Bookmobile), and all libraries in Minnesota connected to MnLink. All Library patrons must have a current Library card in order to check-out library materials, including use of a computer. You must present your Library card at the time of check-out. There is a $3.00 replacement fee for lost cards. To renew items, please stop by the Library with your Library card, call the Library at (218) 385-2436 (leave a message on the answering machine if the Library is closed), or log on to www.nympubliclibrary.org. Overdue fines are no longer collected, but replacement charges are still assessed for lost or damaged items. Failure to return items or pay replacement fees can result in a Petty Misdemeanor – please refer to MN Statute 609.541. All fees, including overdue fines to other libraries, totaling more than $5.00 need to be paid in full before any additional check-out (including computer use) is allowed. Parents please note: You are responsible for the items your child checks out and any fees that may accumulate. Discretion as to the content of Library materials checked out by your child is solely your responsibility. We support a reader’s right to choose what they read. If you, as a parent, feel otherwise, please discuss with your child what you consider appropriate for them to check-out. INTERLIBRARY LOAN: Requests for items not owned by the Library can be made with the assistance of the Library staff or by logging onto www.nympubliclibrary.org. Use www.mnlink.org if not available in Viking Library System. NOTIFICATIONS: Pre-overdue notices, overdue notices, and request notification is available via phone, email and text messaging service. Discuss options with Library staff. APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR: The New York Mills Public Library Board and Staff try to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for all library patrons. Library patrons have a right to expect friendly and competent library service provided in a calm, safe atmosphere, without disruptions from other patrons. The staff has a right to provide library services without fear of abuse or threatening behavior from people using the library or library grounds. As determined at the discretion of Library Staff, patrons regardless of age who act inappropriately will be asked to leave the library. Anyone asked to leave may have library privileges suspended. Library privileges of repeat offenders may be revoked. The police will be called if necessary. Library property protected by video surveillance. Inappropriate behavior includes, but is not limited to: Illegal acts, harassment of library patrons or staff, loud or abusive behavior, misuse of furniture, equipment, or computers, running, horseplay, loud socializing, loud cell phone conversation, use of scooters, rollerblades, or skateboards, lack of appropriate attire, bodily hygiene so offensive as to constitute a nuisance to other patrons or staff, use of ci******es and/or e-ci******es in the Library or within 20 feet of the entry doors, consumption or possession of alcohol, public intoxication. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are allowed in the building, but must be cleaned up immediately if spilled. GOVERNANCE: The Library Board is responsible for all budget and policy decisions, and meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 4:30 pm, unless otherwise advertised. All meetings are open to the public. The Friends of the Library assist with fundraising and advocacy of the Library, and meets twice a year. Everyone is invited to join. Ask Library staff for more information. Handicap parking available in the parking lot behind the Library. No animals allowed except service animals specifically trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. Any item checked-out within Viking Library System can be returned to our Library. A book drop is available by the Library’s backdoor. The Library sponsors programs and events such as story time, summer reading program, and Legacy events. Information about Library events is available on www.nympublic.library.org and on Facebook. Please note: Photos may be taken at various Library activities and events. These photos may be posted on the Library’s website, page, newspaper article, or other promotional materials. Donations are accepted year round. Please drop off during open hours only. All donated material become property of the New York Mills Public Library and will be added to the Library’s collection or sold on the Used Book Sale as determined by Library Staff. By law, the Library is not allowed to appraise the value of the donated materials. However, a receipt acknowledging the number of items donated can be obtained upon request. If you have a large donation of materials, please call the Library 218-385-2436 as storage space is limited. Other gifts accepted:
• Cash donations: Help the Library purchase materials, supplies, furnishings, and equipment. In lieu of overdue fines, please consider giving a cash donation. A link to online giving can be found on our website www.nympubliclibrary.org.
• Memorials: Monetary gifts from individuals or organizations in memory of someone can be used to add materials to the Library. A book plate will list the donor and the person in whose honor the gift has been made.
• In Kind: Volunteer your time at the Library by helping Library staff or join the Friends of the Library and help with fundraising projects. For more information, please call 218-385-2436. All gifts and donations to the Library are tax deductible. Please consult the Library staff before posting any material on the bulletin board. The Library’s bulletin board is intended for the promotion of civic, cultural, and educational events or services which are of general interest to the public. It is not intended to promote any specific private or commercial enterprise. The New York Mills Public Library does not advocate or endorse the viewpoints, events, or services publicized on the Bulletin board. NEW YORK MILLS PUBLIC LIBRARY MEETING ROOM POLICY
The use of the New York Mills Public Meeting Room is intended for library sponsored programs and meetings and organizations of a non-profit, public service or educational nature. Religious and fraternal groups will be considered on individual basis of need and availability. For profit groups may use the facility for educational purposes, but a donation will be requested. All meetings must be scheduled in advance with the Library staff. To make a reservation for the Meeting Room, call the Library during regular hours. Reservations will be accepted in advance according to availability and purpose on a first-come, first-served basis--no group will be asked to leave in lieu of another group, with the exception of Library sponsored programs or meetings. We will not accept reservations of a long standing nature. When making a reservation, the Library staff will ask for your organization name, name of adult responsible and in attendance at the meeting, phone number, date of meeting, starting and ending times of meeting. If meeting is scheduled after the Library is closed, an adult is responsible for obtaining a key and returning promptly (return in Book Drop). Cancellations should be made in advance, if possible. Facilities shall not be used for money-making projects except by nonprofit organizations where the profits are donated to a New York Mills non-profit community fund. The Library is a to***co free facility--no smoking or e-ci******es shall be permitted on the premises. Do not stand within 25 feet of the Library entrances while smoking. Non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, and meals may be served in the Meeting Room; however, any food or beverage that is spilled must be cleaned up immediately. All garbage must be disposed of properly. Groups or persons using the Meeting Room will be responsible for the general care and cleaning of the premises (including the meeting room, library foyer, and rest rooms), turning off the lights, locking all doors, erasing the white board, wiping off the tables, etc. There will be no charge for the use of the facilities. Any damages to the Meeting Room, furniture, equipment, or premises will be the responsibility of the user(s) and fees will be assessed at the discretion of the Library Director or Library Board. Meeting Room must be left in a clean condition. (If it is not in a clean condition when you arrive, please notify the Library Director.) Any group or person which fails to clean up the Meeting Room will be billed a custodial fee of $25.00 and may be denied future use of the Meeting Room. The tables and chairs will not be allowed to be taken out of the Meeting Room for private use. The administration of the Library's facilities is the responsibility of the Library Director and Library Board. The above policies may be waived or modified under the discretion of the Library Board. The Library Board reserves the right to cancel a reservation or to refuse a reservation for any infraction or misrepresentation of these policies.
