During the month of April, you may notice a difference in the uniforms worn by members of the New York Mills Police Department. April is National Autism Awareness Month and the members of NYMPD will be showing their support to increase awareness by sporting uniforms with the below pictured patches.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or autism, is a complex neurological and developmental disorder that affects how a person acts, communicates, learns, and interacts with others.
ASD affects the structure and function of the brain and nervous system. Because it affects a child's development, ASD is called a developmental disorder. ASD can last throughout a person's life. People with this disorder have problems with communication, interactions with other people (social skills), restricted interests and repetitive behaviors.

TWO TEENAGERS ARRESTED ON BURGLARY AND MULTIPLE OTHER CHARGES AFTER PURSUIT.

On Tuesday December 9th, 2025, at approximately 4:00am The New Hartford Police Department arrested two Syracuse teens, ages 16 and 17, in connection with a burglary at a local smoke shop after being apprehended with a stolen vehicle.

On Tuesday morning at 4:00am New Hartford Police Officers responded to assist The New York Mills Police Department with a vehicle that failed to comply with New York Mills Police who were attempting to stop the vehicle after observing a vehicle and traffic law violation on Commercial Drive, in The Village of New York Mills. The operator of the vehicle failed to comply with Police Officers. The vehicle continued and eventually became involved in a minor collision. Both occupants of the vehicle fled on foot and were apprehended in New York Mills. Police discovered that the vehicle involved in this incident was previously stolen from The City of Syracuse.

Inside the vehicle Officers observed what appeared to be evidence of a recent Burglary. Police then collectively were able to determine that there was a break in at The One Stop Smoke Shop on Commercial Dr., in The Town of New Hartford. Upon arrival to this location officers observed signs of forced entry and confirmed that merchandise had been stolen. New Hartford Police Crime Scene Unit Evidence Technicians responded to the business to process the scene.

The 16- and 17-year-old that were apprehended after the vehicle pursuit were charged with the following by New Hartford Police.

1) NYS PL 140.20 - Burglary in 3rd Degree, a Felony.

2) NYS PL 155.25 - Petit Larceny, a Misdemeanor.

The 16- and 17-year-olds were also charged by The New York Mills Police Department with the following.

1) NYS PL 165.50 - Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 3rd Degree, a Felony

2) NYS PL 165.05 - Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in 3rd Degree, a Misdemeanor

3) NYS PL 145.00 - Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree, a Misdemeanor.

4) NYS PL 270.25 - Unlawful fleeing a Police Officer in the 3rd Degree, a Misdemeanor.

5) NYS VTL Violations.

The 16- and 17-year-olds were transported to Oneida County Family Court for arraignment after they were processed on the charges.

One juvenile was turned over to The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office after arraignment as he had an outstanding arrest warrant issued by The Onondaga County Family Court. The other juvenile was transported to The Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center in Syracuse as he is a repeat offender.

New York Mills Police Officers, New Hartford Police Officers, Yorkville Police, Whitestown Police and Oneida County Sheriff's Deputies worked to saturate the area upon the foot pursuit to quickly contain and apprehend both suspects.
