BREAKING🚨 Karoline Leavitt is resigning as White House press secretary at the end of August, and Trump has already handed her the next job: helping Republicans win the midterms.
Trump posted the news on Truth Social Wednesday afternoon, calling Leavitt, 28, one of his "most trusted aides" and saying she is departing "so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family, a decision I totally understand and respect!" In the same post, he wrote that she "will now be one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party, as we work to defy History, and conclusively win the Midterm Elections."
Leavitt gave birth to her second child in May and came back to the briefing room podium on July 16 with "Let's get back to work." That was four weeks ago.
What she leaves behind is a briefing room the White House itself now runs. In February 2025, her office seized control of the press pool from the White House Correspondents' Association, the group of reporters that had set the terms of access for decades. Associated Press journalists were pushed out of the Oval Office. "The changes to the press pool today show that the White House is just using a new means to do the same thing: retaliate against news organizations for coverage the White House doesn't like," the association wrote.
The seating chart was next. Leavitt confirmed the West Wing was "seriously considering" taking that over too, saying it was "fundamentally unfair that a group of D.C.-based elitists get to choose who gets to cover the president of the United States," and accusing the correspondents' association of guarding a "monetized monopoly over the briefing room." The association's answer was that the White House should prove it is not "afraid to explain their policies and field questions from an independent media free from government control."
At her first briefing in January 2025, Leavitt told reporters they had access to "the most transparent and accessible president in American history." In June 2025, pressed on free speech and Trump's warning that protesters at his military parade would be met with "heavy force," she blamed Democrats for "left wing riots," repeated Trump's claim that protesters were "paid insurrectionists," and walked out of the 26-minute briefing without taking another question.
