I had a quiet moment of reflection at the Lae War Cemetery.

I paid my respects to the Australian and Allied soldiers and officers who lost their lives during the New Guinea campaign in World War Il.

The cemetery is the final resting place for 2,818 Commonwealth servicemen.

It is a poignant reminder of our shared history and sacrifice, including the contribution and sacrifice of the people of Papua New Guinea.

Moments like these remind us of the immense human cost of war, and of the enduring importance of preserving peace, partnership and friendship between our two countries.

Lest We Forget.

We all do well, when we all do well.

In Lae, Australia is working with partners across education, business, community organisations and sport to provide opportunities for women and girls to participate, learn and lead.

Communities are stronger when everyone has the opportunity to participate.

Thank you to the Lae community for your warm welcome and for sharing your stories and knowledge with me.

📍 Day 1 in Papua New Guinea 🇵🇳🇦🇺

Kicked off my first visit to PNG with some NRL and caught up with Prime Minister Marape in the stands.

A massive congratulations to PNG RUGBY FOOTBALL LEAGUE for developing the world’s first Rugby League Gender Equality Strategy, a framework that ensures that women and girls have a safe, inclusive, and equal seat at the table, from grassroots to elite leadership.

Australia continues to support sport across the Pacific.

AusAlert test alert – Monday 27 July 🚨

AusAlert, a new national warning system that uses the latest technology, is being launched by the Australian Government to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.
AusAlert will launch in October 2026, but before then it is being tested across Australia.
On Monday 27 July, your mobile phone, tablet or smart watch may receive a test alert.

The test time:
• 2:00 pm AEST

If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

This is only a test, so you don’t need to do anything.
In a real emergency, you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

Sport can empower women and girls, build leadership and strengthen communities.

Ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, thanks to the UK High Commission for bringing us together for a breakfast discussion on the power of sport to drive positive change (made even better with a traditional Scottish porridge breakfast). ☕🏅🥣

Only one week remaining to nominate for the Women’s International Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (WIN DRR) Leadership Awards 2026.

The awards celebrate women from all walks of life, including government, academia, civil society and local communities, whose leadership is advancing disaster risk reduction and resilience across the Asia-Pacific.

I look forward to reviewing this year's nominations and recognising the remarkable women whose work is helping communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.

Nominations close on 26 July 2026.

Ending gender-based violence is a priority for Australia at home and internationally.

Australia is pleased to support the Southeast Asia Gender-based Violence Prevention Platform, which is working closely with partners across the region to strengthen evidence-based action to prevent gender-based violence.

We welcome the announcement of the Platform’s first round of grantees and research projects which are supporting inclusive and community-led gender-based violence prevention efforts in Southeast Asia.

“Effective prevention begins with listening to communities and supporting them to generate evidence, strengthen their leadership, and turn learning into action. Through these grants, we hope to contribute to more inclusive and locally grounded approaches to preventing gender-based violence across the region.” - Irene Widjaya, Southeast Asia GBV Prevention Platform.
