Dear Families for Freedom Members, Supporters, and Allies,
For too long, we have answered heartbreaking calls from our brothers and sisters who were detained right inside immigration courts—sometimes moments after courageously pleading their cases. We have watched our community members be targeted, stripped of their dignity, and detained without detainers. It has been a cruel, inhumane practice that turned places of due process into zones of fear.
But yesterday, justice won.✨️
A federal judge in California has just issued a nationwide block against the administration’s policy of making civil arrests at immigration courts!
In a powerful 71-page ruling, Judge P. Casey Pitts called out these courthouse-arrest policies for what they truly are: "arbitrary and capricious." The judge rightly acknowledged the severe "chilling effect" these arrests have had, noting that the policy completely failed to account for how it terrified noncitizens and stopped them from attending their own court proceedings.
As Jordan Wells, senior staff attorney at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, beautifully put it:
This is a massive win, but the fight isn't over.
Government officials are already pushing back, calling this ruling "judicial activism" and signaling that they will continue to fight to keep their deportation machine running.
We are overjoyed by yesterday's decision, but Families for Freedom will never stop standing against these injustices. We will continue to organize, advocate, and protect our communities from inhumane enforcement.
