I am proud and deeply grateful to share that Francesco’s Law has passed both houses of the New York State Legislature and now heads to Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk for her signature.

With the passage of Francesco’s Law, New York is poised to have one of the strongest firearm safe storage laws in the nation. This is a major victory for gun safety, su***de prevention, and public health.

Thank you to Assemblymember Khaleel Anderson, the bill’s Assembly sponsor, and to Assembly Woman Monique Chandler-Waterman and Senator Cordell Cleare for hosting Gun Violence Awareness Day. Together, we are taking meaningful action to save lives and prevent tragedy before it happens.

A great surprise. Mom and Dad were in Albany for a medical appointment and stopped by my office at the State Capitol!

STATEMENT ON PASSAGE OF REDISTRICTING REFORM AMENDMENT FROM SENATE CITIES 1 COMMITTEE CHAIR ERIK BOTTCHER

At a time when states across the country are aggressively redrawing congressional districts to gain partisan advantage, New York must have the tools necessary to protect fair representation and respond to changing circumstances. The New York State Senate has taken an important step to strengthen and modernize our redistricting process by passing a constitutional amendment that provides greater clarity, accountability, and transparency in how legislative and congressional district lines are drawn. This proposal preserves the role of the Independent Redistricting Commission while establishing clear timelines and procedures to prevent the kind of deadlock and uncertainty New Yorkers experienced after the 2020 census.

It ensures that elected representatives, accountable to the voters, can act when the process breaks down, while maintaining important protections for voting rights and communities of interest. Ultimately, this amendment will be decided by the voters, giving New Yorkers the final say on how their democracy should function. I was proud to support this measure and look forward to continuing the
conversation about how we can build a more effective, transparent, and resilient redistricting process for the future.

🚧 Great government should work faster and smarter.

I’m proud that the New York State Senate has passed my legislation with Assemblymember Pat Burke extending New York City’s joint bidding authority, a common-sense tool that helps deliver critical public infrastructure projects more efficiently.

By allowing utility work and public construction to be coordinated under a single contract, joint bidding reduces delays, cuts costs, minimizes street disruptions, and helps get projects like street reconstructions, sewer upgrades, and other essential public works completed faster. Instead of leaving neighborhoods waiting while multiple contractors coordinate separately, we can keep projects moving and deliver results for New Yorkers.

This is good government in action: less bureaucracy, faster construction, and better infrastructure for our communities. 🚧🏗️

I was proud to join Equality NY, Senator Rachel May, Tony Simone, and advocates from across New York at Equality Day in support of the Freedom to Read Act, their bill that would create a fair process for handling challenges to books and protects against politically motivated censorship.

Books change lives. Every young person deserves access to diverse, age-appropriate stories and perspectives, free from censorship and political pressure.

New York must continue to stand for intellectual freedom and the freedom to read. 📚🏳️‍🌈
