CHCF made incredible strides this year, so today, we’re shouting out some of the amazing partners that make our work possible – you know their names! We’re talking about MacKenzie Scott, Robin Hood Foundation, Northwestern Mutual Foundation, and Housing Works.

With their life-changing contributions to our work, we’ve built major support systems for immigrant families, expanded our mental health services, and helped shape policy decisions that lift up our most under-served youth and families.

Your support makes our work possible, and we’re so proud that you trust us as stewards of this community.

Donate now to mirror these exemplary organizations, and you can help us make sure the holidays are still magical for our most under-served communities in New York: https://www.chcfinc.org/donation/

Our Early Education team spent this morning in Long Island City, where CHCF provides services for over 300+ migrants. They read, colored and painted with the children in our Queens-based community.

Our books were 'Baby, See the Colors!' by Ekaterina Trukhan, and 'Where Is the Green Sheep?/Donde esta la oveja verde?' by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek. Thank you for City's First Readers for being such a brilliant partner to CHCF, and helping provide books to children across NYC!

As comes to a close, we're continuing our tour through the storied history of CHCF! Follow along as we take you through some landmark years of one of NYC's oldest grassroots Hispanic organizations.

In 1990, CHCF started the Coalition for Hispanic Family Services. Now, CHFS is its own organization, and New York City’s only Latino foster care and family services agency. We're so proud of how far they've come!

In 2000, CHCF held our first corporate breakfast. Fun fact: the speakers at this inaugural event were Senator Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nydia Velazquez, who still serve the great state of New York today!

In 1998, CHCF begins its after school program at PS/MS 279 in the Bronx. Now, more than 25 years later, CHCF still runs this after school program, and has expanded providing other vital services to PS 59 and PS 226 and the communities they live in. There are even CHCF staff members who grew up attending our after school programs.

In 2007, we opened the Early Care & Education Institute with support from JPMorgan Chase & Co. To this day, ECEI is a 7-person staff that supports a network of 275 providers! Last year, ECEI distributed over 21,000 COVID tests and $38,000 in grants to support our early educators!

We couldn't be prouder of our programs or team. Thank you for supporting our work over the years!

Today we're celebrating an under-recognized activist in LGBTQ+ history: NYC's own Sylvia Rivera.

From her leadership at the Stonewall Inn riots to her work opening up shelters for homeless youth, Rivera was far ahead of her time. Often overlooked in the history of activism, we are committed to keeping her memory alive! Sylvia was a lifelong advocate for marginalized and silenced communities - we lift up her memory today and always.

For , we're touring the history of one of the oldest grassroots Hispanic non-profits in New York City: Us! The Committee for Hispanic Children & Families. Follow along as we take a look at our humble beginnings.

In 1982, as part of an initiative by the city called the Hispanic Task Force on Child Abuse/Neglect, CHCF was founded to give voice to Latino families and their issues. Our first fundraiser, held in the Brooklyn home of co-founder Elba Montalvo, raised $900.

By the end of the year, CHCF was receiving a grant from the City, then the New York Foundation in 1984, and in 1985 we got our first grant from United Way, who continues to help fund our work to this day.

In 1986, CHCF opened its first office in Midtown Manhattan, right on 22nd Street. Stay tuned for more chapters in CHCF history, and happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

As a bonus, check out the background of one of the above photos. You'll see a sign for "Hispanic Heritage WEEK," which finally changed in 1989. Look how far we've come!

For , we're honoring one of the foremost Hispanic women in NYC history: Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor! Born to a Puerto-Rican Family in a Bronx public housing project, Sotomayor is the first Hispanic and first woman of color in Supreme Court history.

Sotomayor, who describes her Hispanic heritage as "an ember that blazes forever", has been a champion of same-sex marriage, affirmative action policies, and the Affordable Care Act. We're so proud of all Hispanic women who make us proud to serve the Bronx every day!

-----

We are proud to stand alongside our Hispanic brothers and sisters as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage month and continue the legacy of our remarkable history of excellence in New York. As one of the oldest grassroots Hispanic organizations in NYC, we have a lot to share about the struggles, the progress and the indelible impact of this often-overlooked community. We are particularly proud of the contributions of some trailblazing Latinas that we’ll feature in the weeks to come. ¡Mantengan atentos!

Thank you to Robin Hood for this recognition, and for your support throughout the years, from helping us update our in-house technology to funding our work with Infant-Toddler Mental Health. We couldn't have done it all without you!

Robin Hood is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month!

In the spirit of unity and empowerment, we're shining a spotlight on five incredible Robin Hood grantees right here in NYC, led by passionate Hispanic/Latinx nonprofit leaders, dedicated to fighting poverty and making a lasting impact in our city. 🙌

1️⃣ Dr. Nancy Gutiérrez, The Leadership Academy 🎓: Build the capacity of educational leaders at every level of the system to disrupt systemic inequities and create the conditions necessary for all students to thrive.
2️⃣ Ramon Peguero, Committee for Hispanic Children & Families 👪: Strengthening the support system and continuum of learning for children and youth.
3️⃣ Gisele Castro, exalt youth 🚸: Elevating expectations of personal success for youth ages 15-19 who’ve been involved in the criminal justice system.
4️⃣ Daniel Diaz, East Side House Settlement 🏠: Expanding opportunities to live more fulfilling lives through education, career, and supportive services.
5️⃣ Debbie Roman, Per Scholas New York 👩‍💻: Providing skills training and access to employer networks to individuals often excluded from tech careers.

Their dedication to creating positive change is an inspiration to us all. Let's celebrate and support the partnerships Robin Hood has created with these leaders and organizations, not just during , but every day as we work together for a more equitable future!

Our Story

Founded in 1982, the Committee for Hispanic Children & Families (CHCF) has over 35 years of experience providing programs reaching 5,100 individuals annually across all five boroughs in New York City.

CHCF has four primary function areas:

Youth Development provides community-based academic and afterschool enrichment programs to supplement students’ education and prepare them for scholastic success and on-time graduation.

The Early Care & Education Institute provides culturally-informed, bilingual professional development to family child care educators to strengthen the quality of early care and teaching delivered to children.
