A keď sa k tomu pridala kapela Express, spievalo a tancovalo sa až do neskorých večerných hodín. Takto sa otvára vinobranie v New Yorku!

🇺🇸🇸🇰 The Unbroken Spirit of 9/11

🕯️ Wednesday evening, our premises played host to a commemorative event marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11, organized in collaboration with Slovak PRO. Alongside fellow compatriots and American guests, we paid tribute to the memory of the victims, the survivors, and the heroic first responders.

📷 The defining highlight of the evening was the opening of an exhibition by Slovak photojournalist Paul Martinka, who has resided in New York for over 30 years and has been photographing for the New York Post since 2001. On the ground during the attacks, he captured through his lens not only the tragedy, but also the courage, solidarity, and humanity of all those impacted. His photographs have been featured in publications such as TIME, Rolling Stone, People, and DER SPIEGEL.

Speaking about his iconic 9/11 photographs, Paul offered a sentiment that perhaps best encapsulates their enduring impact:

“If I had a choice, I would far prefer never to have had to take them.”

During a moderated panel, personal recollections were also shared by Andrej Droba, Ambassador of the Slovak Republicat in USA—who served as a Slovak diplomat in New York at the time of the attacks—and Chief Joseph Fox Joe Fox, a 37-year NYPD veteran and former Chief of the NYPD Transit Bureau.

🎶 The Slovak dimension of the event was underscored by an intimate performance of an excerpt from Requiem:Oratio Spei (Prayer of Hope) by the prominent Slovak composer and Košice native Juraj Filas. The Requiem, which he was finalizing around the time of the attacks, was dedicated to their victims and subsequently performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

🕯️ V stredu večer sa v našich priestoroch uskutočnilo spomienkové podujatie pri príležitosti 25. výročia 9/11, ktoré sme zorganizovali v spolupráci so Slovak PRO. Spolu s krajanmi a americkými hosťami sme si uctili pamiatku obetí, preživších a hrdinských záchranárov.

📷 Vyvrcholením večera bolo otvorenie výstavy slovenského fotoreportéra Paula Martinku, ktorý žije v New Yorku viac ako 30 rokov a od roku 2001 fotografuje pre New York Post. Počas útokov bol priamo v uliciach mesta a svojím objektívom zachytil tragédiu aj odvahu, solidaritu a ľudskosť všetkých, ktorých tieto udalosti zasiahli. Jeho fotografie boli publikované v časopisoch Time, Rolling Stone, People či Der Spiegel.

O svojich ikonických záberoch z 9/11 Paul povedal vetu, ktorá azda najlepšie vystihuje ich silu:

„Keby som si mohol vybrať, bol by som najradšej, keby som ich nikdy nemusel odfotografovať.“

V moderovanej diskusii sa o svoje osobné spomienky podelili aj veľvyslanec SR v USA Andrej Droba, ktorý v čase útokov pôsobil ako slovenský diplomat v New Yorku, a Chief Joe Fox, 37-ročný veterán NYPD a bývalý šéf NYPD Transit Bureau.

🎶 Slovenský rozmer podujatia zvýraznilo komorné uvedenie časti diela Requiem: Oratio Spei (Modlitba nádeje) košického rodáka a významného slovenského skladateľa Juraja Filasa. Rekviem, ktoré dokončoval v čase útokov, venoval ich obetiam; neskôr zaznelo aj v newyorskej Carnegie Hall.

🇸🇰 Preserving the Slovak Language and Traditions for Future Generations in the United States

🎶 More than 50 members of the Slovak community gathered on Long Island this past weekend for the inaugural HOPSA Camp. Slovak Americans of all ages explored traditional Slovak dances and songs and learned to play the fujara, violin, and other musical instruments under the guidance of Noga band and ĽH Pajtáši. Experiences like these help them form a deeper connection with Slovak traditions and their heritage.

👏 A heartfelt thank-you goes to organizer Andrea Valcuha for the tremendous energy and dedication she devoted to making the event possible. The first year was a great success, and preparations are already underway for its return next year.

📚 Language is also an essential part of our traditions and cultural heritage. Beginning in September, online classes in the Slovak language and culture will continue for children of Slovaks living abroad. The program is organized by the Office for Slovaks Living Abroad (Úrad pre Slovákov žijúcich v zahraničí) in cooperation with Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica (Metodické centrum UMB), with classes adapted to the time zones and needs of children living around the world.

🇸🇰 Uchovávame slovenský jazyk a tradície pre ďalšie generácie v USA

🎶 Počas uplynulého víkendu sa viac ako 50 krajanov stretlo na prvom ročníku HOPSA Tábora na Long Islande. Malí aj veľkí slovenskí Američania pod vedením NOGABANDU a ĽH Pajtáši spoznávali slovenské ľudové tance, piesne a hru na fujare, husliach i ďalších hudobných nástrojoch. Aj takýmto spôsobom si vytvárajú vzťah k slovenským tradíciám a svojim koreňom.

👏 Veľké poďakovanie patrí organizátorke Andrei Valčuhovej za energiu a úsilie, ktoré venovala príprave celého podujatia. Prvý ročník zaznamenal veľký úspech a už teraz sa rozbiehajú prípravy na jeho pokračovanie v budúcom roku.

📚 K tradíciám a kultúrnemu dedičstvu neodmysliteľne patrí aj jazyk. Od septembra preto pokračuje online vzdelávanie v slovenskom jazyku a reáliách určené deťom slovenských krajanov. Program organizuje Úrad pre Slovákov žijúcich v zahraničí v spolupráci s Univerzitou Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici a výučba je prispôsobená časovým pásmam aj potrebám detí žijúcich v zahraničí.

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of 11 students and 2 teachers from Spojená škola Sečovce during their educational visit to New York City.

Our young guests were eager to learn how diplomacy works in practice, exploring the daily operations of the Consulate General and the crucial role of foreign diplomatic missions. During an engaging Q&A session with Consul General, the students asked great questions and showed an impressive understanding of international affairs.

Thank you for such an inspiring visit, and we wish the students and teachers from Sečovce a wonderful rest of their trip in the U.S.!

🗽 New York Diary: September Is Off to a Busy Start!

Summer may be slowly coming to an end, but September promises to be an exciting month for the Slovak community in New York and the surrounding area. It will bring new encounters, a new exhibition, Slovak fashion—and many opportunities to come together again. Two exceptional events await us as early as next week.

🏛️ This week, we accepted an invitation from Society of Foreign Consuls in New York, Inc. to a special preview of a new exhibition at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. The event was organized in cooperation with the Museum and the NYC Mayor's Office for International Affairs.

The powerful personal stories reminded us once again of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, as well as the courage, unity, and determination shown by the American people.

🤝 Our meetings with fellow consuls general serving in New York provide valuable opportunities to exchange experiences, discuss cooperation, and plan joint activities for our communities. We have already arranged several meetings during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly week, and we look forward to sharing more about them soon.

🗽 Newyorský zápisník: September sa začína naplno!

Leto sa síce pomaly končí, no september v slovenskej komunite v New Yorku a okolí bude nepochybne poriadne živý. Prináša nové stretnutia, novú výstavu, slovenskú módu – a príležitosti byť opäť spolu. Už budúci týždeň nás čakajú hneď dve výnimočné podujatia.

🏛️ Tento týždeň sme prijali pozvanie Spoločnosti zahraničných konzulov v New Yorku na osobitnú prehliadku novej výstavy v Národnom pamätníku a múzeu 11. septembra. Podujatie pripravila v spolupráci s múzeom a Úradom starostu mesta New York pre medzinárodné záležitosti.

Silné ľudské príbehy nám opäť pripomenuli tragédiu 11. septembra 2001, ale aj odvahu, súdržnosť a odhodlanie Američanov.

🤝 Stretnutia s našimi kolegami, generálnymi konzulmi pôsobiacimi v New Yorku, sú príležitosťou na výmenu skúseností, rozhovory o spolupráci aj prípravu spoločných aktivít pre naše komunity. Dohodli sme sa už aj na viacerých stretnutiach počas blížiaceho sa týždňa Valného zhromaždenia OSN a čoskoro vám o nich povieme viac.

🇺🇸🇸🇰 THE 48TH SLOVAK HERITAGE FESTIVAL IS ALMOST HERE!

On September 20, 2026, Slovaks, friends of Slovakia, and everyone who holds Slovakia close to their heart will once again gather in East Brunswick.

A full day of music, folklore, Slovak food, familiar faces, and new connections awaits. That is the true spirit of the Slovak Heritage Festival—traditions are not simply memories here. They live on through music, dance, language, food, and, above all, through the people who carry them forward.

For 48 years, generations of Slovaks in America have come together at this festival, joined by those who may not have Slovak roots but have also found a special place in their hearts for Slovakia.

And so, for one Sunday in September, New Jersey will feel just a little more Slovak. 🇸🇰

Už 20. septembra 2026 sa v East Brunswick opäť stretnú krajania, priatelia Slovenska a všetci, ktorým je Slovensko blízke.

Čaká nás celodenný program, hudba, folklórne súbory, slovenské chute, známe tváre aj nové stretnutia. A práve v tom je čaro Slovak Heritage Festivalu – tradície tu nie sú iba spomienkou. Žijú ďalej v hudbe, tanci, jazyku, chutiach a najmä v ľuďoch, ktorí ich nesú ďalej.

Už 48 rokov sa tu stretávajú generácie Slovákov v Amerike spolu s tými, ktorí síce slovenské korene nemajú, no Slovensko si našlo miesto aj u nich.

A tak bude na jednu septembrovú nedeľu New Jersey zase o čosi viac slovenské. 🇸🇰

🗽 New York Diary: The Final Days of August in New York

🎻 We began this week at Lincoln Center, where we attended a performance by the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra at the invitation of the Consulate General of Ireland, New York.

Under the baton of Canadian-Ukrainian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, the orchestra performed Verdi’s Requiem alongside the The Metropolitan Opera Chorus. It was a truly exceptional musical experience. Thanks to Ireland’s Consul General, Gerald Angley, we also had the opportunity to meet Maestro Wilson personally after the concert.

Our meeting with our Irish colleagues also had a broader European dimension. Ireland currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a role Slovakia will assume during the first half of 2030. Here in New York, we have yet another opportunity to meet, collaborate, and strengthen the ties among our European partners.

🇺🇦 This week, Ukraine also commemorated the 35th anniversary of its independence. We joined our Ukrainian colleagues at an event organized by the Consulate General of Ukraine in New York and The Ukrainian Museum in New York, which featured a guided tour of Ukrainian art and a live musical performance.

We were also pleased to meet colleagues from the Consulates General of Hungary, Austrian, Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, and several other countries. These relationships are important to us: we meet regularly, invite colleagues to our events, accept their invitations, and create opportunities to bring our communities closer together. New York offers countless occasions to build and strengthen these connections. 🌍

🔬 From culture, we moved into the world of science. At NYU Langone Health, we were welcomed by Dr. Henrieta Scholtzova, whom many members of our Slovak community know well. This time, however, we visited her in her professional setting—a laboratory dedicated to research on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

It was fascinating to learn more about Henrieta’s work and gain a glimpse into the research taking place behind the doors of one of New York’s leading medical institutions. And since memory was one of the themes of our visit, we will make sure to remember this one well. 🙂 In the future, we would be delighted to bring visitors from Slovakia who are interested in scientific and research collaboration.

We wish you a wonderful end to August and an enjoyable final few days of summer. We are already counting down to September—and judging by our calendar, it certainly will not be a quiet one…

🗽 Newyorský zápisník: Posledné augustové dni v New Yorku

🎻 Tento týždeň sme začali v Lincoln Center na pozvanie Generálneho konzulátu Írska koncertom Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra.

Pod taktovkou kanadsko-ukrajinskej dirigentky Keri-Lynn Wilson zaznelo Verdiho Requiem v podaní orchestra, sólistov a zboru Metropolitan Opera. Bol to naozaj výnimočný hudobný výkon. Vďaka generálnemu konzulovi Írska Geraldovi Angleymu sme mali po koncerte príležitosť stretnúť sa s dirigentkou aj osobne.

Stretnutie s írskymi kolegami malo aj európsky rozmer – Írsko v tomto polroku predsedá Rade Európskej únie, nás to čaká v prvej polovici roka 2030. Aj v New Yorku tak máme ďalšiu príležitosť stretávať sa, spolupracovať a udržiavať dobré kontakty medzi európskymi partnermi.

🇺🇦 Tento týždeň si Ukrajina pripomenula aj 35. výročie svojej nezávislosti. Spolu s ukrajinskými kolegami sme si ho pripomenuli na podujatí Generálneho konzulátu Ukrajiny a Ukrajinského múzea v New Yorku, spojenom s prehliadkou ukrajinského umenia a hudobným vystúpením.

Stretli sme sa tu aj s kolegami z generálnych konzulátov Maďarska, Rakúska, Poľska, Litvy, Švédska a ďalších krajín. Takéto kontakty sú pre nás dôležité – stretávame sa, pozývame kolegov na naše podujatia, prijímame ich pozvania a zároveň vytvárame priestor na prepájanie našich komunít. A práve New York dáva takýmto stretnutiam množstvo príležitostí. 🌍

🔬 Z kultúry sme sa potom presunuli do sveta vedy. V NYU Langone nás privítala Dr. Henrieta Scholzová, ktorú mnohí z našej slovenskej komunity dobre poznajú. Tentoraz sme ju však navštívili priamo v jej profesionálnom prostredí – v laboratóriu, ktoré sa venuje výskumu Alzheimerovej choroby a demencie.

Bolo veľmi zaujímavé vidieť, čomu sa Henrieta venuje, a nahliadnuť do práce, ktorá sa odohráva za dverami špičkového newyorského výskumného pracoviska. A keďže témou bola aj pamäť, túto návštevu si radšej dobre zapamätáme. 🙂 Radi sem v budúcnosti privedieme aj hostí zo Slovenska, ktorých zaujíma vedecká a výskumná spolupráca.

🖼️ A nezaháľali sme ani na generálnom konzuláte – tento týždeň sme nainštalovali novú výstavu. Viac sa o nej dočítate v statuse vyššie. Ak vám náhodou unikol, určite sa k nemu vráťte – už čoskoro vám prezradíme aj viac o tom, čo ďalšie pripravujeme na september.
