For too long, communities in the Bronx have been cut off from the Harlem River waterfront and the opportunities it should provide.

I joined the Harlem River Coalition, colleagues in government, advocates, and community members to call for greater investment in the Harlem River waterfront, including equitable access to the Yankee Stadium Ferry Dock.

Our communities deserve waterfront access, more open and green spaces, and stronger connections across the Harlem River, from the South Bronx to East Harlem.

I’m committed to ensuring our communities are not left behind.

Connecting more people to parks can have a major positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our community.

I was happy to meet with the Randall’s Island Park Alliance and tour several locations throughout Randall’s Island. We discussed lighting, ongoing capital projects, and the free educational programming at their urban farm.

Earlier this week, I attended a Legionnaires’ Town Hall Meeting in the South Bronx, organized by the Dept of Health in response to the recent outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease in our community.

Communities like the ones I represent in South Bronx face disproportionate negative health disparities that make our residents far more susceptible to severe disease if they contract Legionnaires’.

These disparities and preventable diseases like hypertension and diabetes create additional challenges whenever our city faces a health emergency. This is why we must continue to focus on the underlying health issues we face, and prioritize access to primary health care and mandate cultural competency in our health care professions.

Additionally, we need to ask the question of why do we have Legionnaires’ outbreaks regularly, and we should begin to study ways to improve the design of cooling towers to possibly address and limit the growth of harmful bacteria within their systems.

By investing in safer infrastructure, New York can better protect communities that have historically experienced greater environmental health burdens and reduce the likelihood of future outbreaks.

The East River Esplanade along East Harlem has served as a culturally significant location for generations, providing local residents a scenic place to enjoy the tranquility of the waterfront.

Over time, this vital esplanade has fallen into disrepair, and while other waterfronts throughout NYC have seen major improvements, this stretch continues to deteriorate further, despite longstanding plans for rehabilitation.

Yesterday, I stood alongside Speaker Julie Menin, Councilmember Elsie Encarnacion, the Manhattan Borough President, CB11 Manhattan, Esplanade Friends, Civitas, WeAct and many other leaders and community organizations for a press conference to demand the restoration of the full length of the East River Esplanade. Our community deserves equitable investment in our waterfront to ensure it can be enjoyed now, and for generations to come.

Last week, I joined NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services Commissioner Rossana Rosado and Bronx state legislators at Lincoln Hospital for a briefing on public safety in our communities.

We discussed the need to continue investing in violence prevention, community based programs, and more opportunities for our young people. These investments are an important part of keeping our neighborhoods safe.
