Community Service Society of New York CSS works with and for New Yorkers to promote economic opportunity and champion an equitable city and A STRONG NEW YORK IS AN EQUITABLE NEW YORK.

Every New Yorker, across income levels, race and ethnicity, and background, shares similar goals. We all want economic well-being, the ability to exercise our rights, and to live with dignity. The Community Service Society of New York (CSS) has worked with and for New Yorkers since 1843 to promote economic opportunity and champion an equitable city and state. We center the voices and experiences o

f communities of color and people facing economic insecurity, striving to create a more secure future. Through a strategic combination of data-driven research, direct services, and people-driven advocacy, we ensure New Yorkers have the power to create change in their lives and the life of our city and state. Our programs, policy analysis, legal advocacy, and campaigns expand access to health care, safe and affordable housing, employment opportunities, consumer debt assistance, and more—making a tangible difference in the lives of millions. We work with a broad coalition of New Yorkers—from community members, activists, and volunteers to government officials and grassroots organizations—to fight for what matters most, especially to those striving to make ends meet. Our collective victories, like stronger tenant protections, paid sick and family leave for working New Yorkers, and one of the strongest “ban the box” laws in the nation, pave the way for lasting change. We won’t stop until New York is a place where those most impacted by injustice have a fair chance to not only survive, but thrive. Join us in powering a more equitable New York by visiting cssny.org.

🔴 We’re thrilled to welcome Governor Kathy Hochul to our offices today to sign the Fair Medical Debt Reporting Act - an important piece of legislation that will keep medical debt off consumer credit reports

Once the Fair Medical Debt Reporting Act becomes law, medical debt will no longer be reportable to credit agencies and will not show up on any New Yorkers’ credit reports.

This is a HUGE win for patients and a major step to .

Join us in saying THANK YOU to Governor Kathy Hochul, Senator Gustavo Rivera, and Assembly Member Amy Paulin for supporting this important bill.

It will allow New Yorkers to build good credit or get a bank loan without fear of medical bills becoming a crushing financial burden.

📢We were at NYCHRA headquarters, joining Riders Alliance, TWU Local 100, Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA, elected officials, and advocates urging Mayor Eric Adams to expand Fair Fares to 200% of the FPL.

With the new program budget, it's possible to deliver transit affordability for many more NYers. NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Mayor Adams underscored the importance of Fair Faires by expanding eligibility from 100% to 120% of FPL, but the program still leaves too many people with low incomes struggling to live and work in our city.

Working people are the very people who run this city. By expanding Fair Fares eligibility to the 200% of poverty, Mayor Eric Adams can unlock the full potential of the program and make it a true pathway to economic mobility for one million NYers.

Mayor Adams, let's get this done. We encourage you to boost transit affordability.

How can we meet the needs of NYCHA's workforce?

Yesterday, we joined to welcome NYCHA residents, advocates, program participants, and elected officials to discuss the intersection of employment and criminal justice in NYC's public housing.

Our recent report found that 20% of NYCHA residents are unemployed or out of the labor force. And that number rises among Black and Latino men.

Public housing's main goal is to provide affordable, safe rental homes, but it's about more than that. At its best, public housing promotes economic opportunity for residents.

Working together, we are bringing policy-making close to those on the ground who have a hand in implementation and the stakeholders most impacted by it.

Thanks to all who joined (in-person or by Zoom).

We are joining Red Hook Initiative - RHI to bring together NYCHA residents, advocates, program participants, and elected officials to discuss ground-up solutions to meet the needs of NYCHA's workforce.

The policy-making process is often far removed from those on the ground that have a hand in implementation and the stakeholders that are most impacted by it.

This event will include a panel discussion and break-out session so that we can dive deeper into the issues, such as the imbalance of over-policing and under-funded programming at NYCHA developments, and lift up community-supported solutions. Giving advocates and residents an opportunity to learn and share their experiences and expertise, providing a deeper context for the policies and programs being considered.

There is limited space so RSVP soon, or you can join us virtually through Zoom. Find the links in the comments section.

In New York City, despite a decade-long trend of increasing gains in the labor market and rising educational attainment, the proportion of 16- to 24-year-olds who are both out of school and out of work has skyrocketed since the COVID-19 pandemic. Such a trend reversal further pushes this already vulnerable population toward the fringes of our economy and society.

Check out our latest brief, Reversing Nearly a Decade of Positive Trends: The Lingering Impact of the Pandemic on Young Adults Who are Out-of-School and Out-of-Work in New York City. This brief, co-authored with Community Service Society of New York, provides key insights on the out-of-school, out-of-work population from a variety of socioeconomic and demographic perspectives, identifies programs and policies that seek to address the needs of this population, and includes recommendations to ensure that young adults who are out of school and out of work are put back on track to economic security.

in 1959, the New York School of Social Work—first founded by CSS—officially joined Columbia University as its School of Social Work. The school originated as a six-week summer course in philanthropy established by CSS 125 years ago, in 1898. From the start, Columbia social science faculty advised on the curriculum. By 1904, it was a year-long, degree-granting program—the nation’s first professional degree for the nascent field of social work. The casework method, which was first taught at our School of Philanthropy and still influences professional social work today, has its roots in CSS’s early practice of working one-on-one with families in poor districts to evaluate and address their needs.

This lecture series from 1914-1915 shows some of the nation’s leading figures in social work lecturing at the school, including Lillian Wald, founder of Henry Street Settlement, and Frances Perkins, herself a graduate of the program, who went on to serve as Labor Secretary under Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
