The world needs more cooperation, not less. And strong partnerships are essential to making multilateralism work.

As kicks off in New York, the EU is stepping up its engagement with partners across regions to strengthen an effective, UN-centred multilateral system.

From defending the UN Charter and international law, to advancing peace, security, humanitarian action and sustainable development, the message is clear: tackling global challenges requires global cooperation.

Over the course of high-level week, President of the European Union António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas, and nearly a dozen EU Commissioners will engage with partners throughout the week — from Africa and the Indo-Pacific to Latin America and the Caribbean, the Western Balkans and beyond.

25 years on, we remember the victims of 9/11.

In our host city, New York, we stand with the families, survivors, and first responders whose lives were forever changed.

We honour their memory by choosing peace, solidarity and unity — and by standing together in moments of danger, when alliances matter most.

Human rights & democracy are in retreat in many places, but they will always be at the heart of 🇪🇺EU action — within Europe and around the world.🌍🌎🌏

Human rights are universal, indivisible, and essential to human dignity.

In 2025, the EU stood up for universal human rights at the UN—supporting the Human Rights Council, fostering close cooperation with the Office of
the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, leading resolutions to protect and promote human rights and strengthen accountability & calling for a properly funded human rights pillar in reform.

We will remain steadfast in defending human rights and upholding the principles of the UN Charter and international law.

The EU’s 2025 Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy reaffirms our fundamental commitment to protecting people and empowering individuals.
