Human rights & democracy are in retreat in many places, but they will always be at the heart of 🇪🇺EU action — within Europe and around the world.🌍🌎🌏

Human rights are universal, indivisible, and essential to human dignity.

In 2025, the EU stood up for universal human rights at the UN—supporting the Human Rights Council, fostering close cooperation with the Office of
the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, leading resolutions to protect and promote human rights and strengthen accountability & calling for a properly funded human rights pillar in reform.

We will remain steadfast in defending human rights and upholding the principles of the UN Charter and international law.

The EU’s 2025 Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy reaffirms our fundamental commitment to protecting people and empowering individuals.

Today marks International Criminal Justice Day.

The International Criminal Court remains the cornerstone of the international criminal justice system, delivering accountability for the most serious crimes of concern to the international community and upholding the rights and dignity of victims.

The European Union reaffirms its firm commitment to the Rome Statute, to its universality and integrity, and to its full and effective implementation. All states are called upon to cooperate fully with the Court.
Violations of international law, including international human rights law and international humanitarian law, continue to cause immense suffering around the world. Accountability is what prevents future atrocities and what makes lasting peace possible.

There can be no lasting peace without justice, and no justice without accountability and meaningful reparations for victims.

The UN 🇺🇳 just agreed to one of the most significant budget reforms in decades — and the EU 🇪🇺 helped make it happen.

For years, the UN was required to return funds to Member States that it had never actually received… a major flaw in the UN’s financial framework.

Thanks to this reform, we’ve preserved ~USD 1.2 billion in liquidity. Proof that multilateralism still delivers.
