One Hundred Black Men

One Hundred Black Men The mission of One Hundred Black Men, Inc. Our members include leaders across the business, political, and non-profit sectors in New York.

of New York (OHBM) is to play a proactive role in leveraging our collective talent, ability, and energy toward achieving meaningful gains for the African American community. For over 50 years, One Hundred Black Men has worked with government, corporations, and community leaders to transform economic and social policy, as well as launch independent programs and organizations that serve low-income c

ommunities. The organization provides scholarships, educational support, economic empowerment, mentoring, health and wellness initiatives and an overall voice for the African American community. One Hundred Black Men began in NYC in 1963 as a non-profit organization of like-minded leaders who met to advocate for improvement in conditions in their communities. These men envisioned an organization that would capitalize on the collective power of community to address issues of inequities and to empower Black Americans to become agents of change. These visionaries were business and industry leaders such as David Dinkins, Robert Mangum, Cyril Tyson, J. Bruce Llewellyn, Livingston Wingate, Andrew Hatcher, and Jackie Robinson. They forever changed the face of social, economic and political empowerment. One Hundred Black Men is proud to continue support for many initiatives including:

1) The school Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx was founded by members of One Hundred Black Men, Inc. as a response to the dire crisis facing young boys. When the doors opened in 2004, it was the first all male public school to open in New York City in 30 years. In 2008, a second Eagle Academy opened in Brooklyn. Currently, six Eagle Academy schools are in operation serving over 3,000 students via the independent organization, Eagle Academy Foundation.

2) In 1986, members of the One Hundred Black Men helped found a national organization based on our model, 100 Black Men of America, Inc. which is based in Atlanta, Georgia, The organization has grown to a confederation of over 116 chapters located in the United States and abroad.

Today marks an extraordinarily significant day in our history: February 3, 1870, when the 15th Amendment was ratified. This pivotal amendment granted Black men the right to vote, a monumental step toward equality in our democracy. However, we must acknowledge the harsh reality that followed. Despite this constitutional promise, Southern states employed poll taxes, literacy tests, and even threats of violence to systematically disenfranchise Black voters.

It wasn’t until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965—almost a century later—that the true spirit of the 15th Amendment began to be realized. On this day, we honor the unsung heroes of the civil rights movement who fought tirelessly for voting rights and laid the groundwork for future generations. Their courage and resilience remind us that the struggle for justice and equality is ongoing. Let us continue to stand in solidarity and ensure that every voice is heard and every vote is counted.
