This Christmas, while celebrating with your families, please remember that Jesus and his family were refugees. Please choose to spend this day supporting people who are in crisis, in limbo, and absolutely unable to predict their futures.
Jesus and his family were fleeing persecution, like millions of refugees today.
A refugee is defined as someone forced to flee their country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for their race, religion, nationality, political views or social affiliations.
In ‘Flight into Egypt’ (Matthew, Chapter 2) the Holy Family are warned after Jesus’ birth to escape Bethlehem, as King Herod planned to ‘seek out the child and destroy him.’ ‘Herod went on to massacre all male children under the age of 2. Whether you view this story as fact, parable or metaphor, the violence of oppressive regimes continues throughout centuries, throughout generations, and across cultures.
Today, people from hundreds of countries face unknowable futures due to targeted persecution. To protect themselves and their loved ones, they escape into the unknown.
