October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This summer, Nashers at our Queens Summer Institute site created a zine exploring the stigma, impacts, and media representation of sexual assault and domestic violence.
At the end of every Sadie Nash program, Nashers create projects that explore issues that matter to them, using their creativity and voices to raise awareness and spark important conversations. 💜

Swipe for a preview of their powerful work, and head to the link in our bio to explore the full zine!

Content Warning: This post and the accompanying zine discuss themes of sexual assault and domestic violence. We encourage you to engage with this content in a way that feels safe and comfortable for you.

"Am I too young to make a change?"

Last Sunday, October 11th was International Day of the Girl— a day to recognize the unique challenges that young girls face and celebrate their achievements. At Sadie Nash, we uplift the voices and leadership of not only young girls but also gender-expansive youth.

Today we're sharing an excerpt from a poem written this summer by Newark Nasher Saniya titled "Corruption in This Function," challenging the ways young people are underestimated and silenced. Saniya's words remind us why International Day of the Girl matters: girls and gender-expansive youth deserve to have their voices heard, as they are already leading tomorrow.

🏳️‍🌈 CELEBRATE LGBTQIA+ HISTORY MONTH 🏳️‍🌈

Today, we celebrate the incredibly beautiful tapestry of LGBTQIA+ history by highlighting some of the many icons and moments such as Marsha P. Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Bayard Rustin, and more. These icons inspire us to build community and fight for one another in difficult times. How many of these icons do you know?

Each week this month, we'll share a piece of q***r history as we celebrate the past, present, and future of the LGBTQIA+ community.

📣 HAPPY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY 📣

In 2003, Wilma Mankiller spoke to Nashers about her experience as the first woman elected as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. She served for 10 years, dedicating her life to advocating for education, healthcare, housing services and improving Nation-to-Nation relations with the federal U.S. government.

On this day, we celebrate Native people's heritage, moving away from narratives of violence and white supremacy toward education, repair, and advocacy.
