Please Note an Important Change to the Online Visa Application and Appointment System:

Starting on 3rd of August 2015, all applicants for a Schengen visa (type C, for stays of up to 90 days) can submit a visa application and book their appointment online with the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York. Please note that you will still need to come to this Consulate in person in order to go through the visa-interview, lodge the printed application form and the supporting documents, pay the visa fee and register your biometric data (fingerprints). Public Diplomacy at the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York:

• The Culture and Education Section provides and distributes materials about Switzerland, informs the public about the cultural scene in Switzerland and locally encourages cooperation with American institutions in the fields of art, architecture, and design.

• The Division for Economic Affairs and Communication, in cooperation with the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, monitors economic and financial markets in the New York area. It closely follows the developments and regulations in the local financial industry, particularly with regard to the needs and interests of Switzerland and Swiss companies, and further supports US-Swiss business relations in cooperation with the Trade & Investment Section. This section also manages social media, press relations and community outreach.

• The Trade and Investment Section, under the auspices of Switzerland Global Enterprise, supports and advises Swiss companies exporting to the US as well as North American companies considering a new or expanded direct investment in Switzerland, and in general supports and promotes US-Swiss business relations.

🇨🇭🚲 What if your bike could drive itself to the next rider?

Mechanical engineering students at ETH Zürich, Global have developed AutoBike, an autonomous e-bike designed to rethink bike-sharing. Riders use it like a regular e-bike, but after the ride, it can move independently at walking pace to where it is needed next.

The idea could help bike-sharing providers tackle one of their biggest operational challenges: redistributing bikes between full and empty stations. Built by ETH students from concept to prototype within one academic year, AutoBike combines autonomous navigation, steering and braking in a standard bike frame.

🇨🇭🤖 AI may save time at work, but what happens to that time?

Researchers at the University of Lausanne surveyed 83 managers and found that 82% reported saving an average of 2 hours and 50 minutes per week thanks to generative AI. That adds up to roughly 1.5 working days per month.

But the study also found that more than half of the managers used the time they saved to do even more work, while 36% did not realize how much time AI had actually freed up.

The findings raise an important question about AI and productivity: if every saved hour simply becomes another hour of work, does greater efficiency really translate into a better way of working?

☀️🇨🇭 Switzerland is bringing more solar power to the Alps!

Around 1,000 solar panels are set to be installed along the Swiss approach to the Great St. Bernard Tunnel, covering around 7,000 square meters.

The installation is expected to generate around 450 MWh of electricity per year, covering approximately half of the tunnel’s energy needs. The first section is planned to be operational by the end of 2026, with the remainder following in 2027.

The tunnel already produces renewable electricity through hydropower, and the new solar installation will further expand its use of renewable energy.

🐟🤖 Swiss researchers are taking inspiration from nature to rethink underwater robotics!

Researchers at EPFL and New York University have developed ScaFi, a robotic fish that can be built at very different sizes while maintaining the same fish-like swimming motion.

The team tested robots ranging from 0.6 to 2.9 meters long, from shallow creeks to Lake Geneva. Unlike propeller-driven underwater vehicles, the fish-inspired design moves by bending its body and tail, making it better suited for environments with vegetation, sediment or wildlife.

The scalable design could make it easier to develop robotic tools for exploring and monitoring a wide range of aquatic environments.

Last week, we opened the newest exhibition at the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York, They Have Watches, But We Have Time, curated by designers Iskander Guetta and Quang Vinh Nguyen.

This exhibition considers time as a material of design through one of its main instruments: the clock. They Have Watches, But We Have Time interrogates what happens when we understand clocks not simply as measuring tools, but as shaping our movements, relations, and identities by forcing multiple temporalities into one, singular timeline.

Our Head of Culture, Elena Bänninger, together with designers and curators Iskander Guetta and Quang Vinh Nguyen, welcomed distinguished guests to mark the opening of They Have Watches, But We Have Time. The exhibition is now on view by appointment through January 15, 2027.

We thank both designers and curators Iskander Guetta and Quang Vinh Nguyen, Mondaine for providing their signature clocks for the exhibition and everyone else who contributed to the exhibition for their engagement and passion in bringing this project to life.

🤖🇨🇭 Can AI really deceive us?

ETH Zürich, Global AI safety researcher Anna Hedström is examining how we interpret the behavior of increasingly capable AI systems.

Her research cautions against assuming that behavior resembling deception, self-preservation or other human traits necessarily reflects actual intent.

Instead, researchers argue for distinguishing between what an AI system does, what consequences that behavior has and what actually causes it. This more rigorous approach could help scientists and policymakers better assess AI risks and determine where safeguards are needed.

Hedström also emphasizes that AI safety should be considered throughout the entire development process, from training data to deployment, rather than added only at the end.

The Swiss government is supporting 26 projects that will examine the origins and ownership histories of cultural objects, with a focus on colonial and archaeological contexts.

The research aims to help institutions better understand how objects entered their collections, improve transparency and provide a stronger basis for future decisions regarding cultural heritage.
