Housing discrimination has no place in New York City.

Commissioner Christine Clarke and Deputy Mayor Deputy Mayor Julie Su stepped into the storied walls of The Tenement Museum to reaffirm a simple but powerful message: your immigration or citizenship status should never determine whether you have access to housing.

A proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development would remove long-standing protections that help ensure equal access to housing and shelter, regardless of s*xual orientation or gender identity. The rule would determine eligibility for housing and shelter based on a person's s*x assigned at birth, disproportionately affecting transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming individuals.

In practice, this could force people into shelters that do not align with their gender identity, subject them to invasive questioning, and increase the risk of discrimination, harassment, or violence during times of crisis.

CGE joined the NYC Commission on Human Rights and other city agencies in writing a public comment to urge the federal government to withdraw this proposed rule. We remain committed to advancing policies that protect the rights, safety, and well-being of all New Yorkers and ensuring equitable access to housing and shelter.

This past Tuesday, on the final day of , CCHR ended with a wrap party bringing together community leaders, advocates, + youth, and allies for an evening celebrating community and the many voices that make NYC stronger. 💪🏽 We reflected on our campaign, which ran throughout 🏳️‍⚧️ And we looked ahead to more work to be done, as we continue our commitment to protect all New Yorkers from discrimination.
